Pros: The ghost of Gabriel is present on Entagled and Ripples

Cons: A Song such as Squonk

What an album! The best songs on this album are Entangled, Mad Man Moon and Ripples. This is prog rock at its finest yet it is accessible to the mainstream market. All the songs with the exception of Squonk are good. The subject of Squonk is good but... the music is really disappointing. But, I enjoyed almost all of them. This album at least for the sake of Entangled, Mad Mad Moon and Ripples is worth buying. All these songs particulary Entangled has got such a heavenly melody that once you listen you wouldn't want it to end. The ending section is the climax. It soars so high that you would feel you have perhaps reached paradise or somewhere close to it. Mad Mad Moon has got unbelievable piano playing by Tony Banks. The arpeggios are played so fast and professionally in that song that I wouldn't hesitate to say that he is among the ranks of famous classical pianists. Ripples again has got wonderful arpeggios like Entangled and Mad Man Moon. Steve Hackett, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins-all of them shine on such kind of songs. Yes! Phil Collins proved on this album what an all-round talent he has got! Well, Peter Gabriel's departure from Genesis after Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was obviously a big blow to Genesis. But here, even without Peter, Genesis made an album that is not only art rock but dare I say- radio friendly! Very rarely you will get such a combination. Finally, there is something strange about this album... was that Peter Gabriel singing the chorus in Ripples and on some sections in Entangled. Listen to those songs you will understand what I am trying to convey here. Now, whoever told that Gabriel left the group before the album Trick of the Tail was made? Perhaps it was a Trick of the Ear... that's all. Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Trick of the Tail (Remastered)

  • All Music Guide

The quality of the group's first post-Peter Gabriel album astonished everyone, especially coming out after an 18-month gap following The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. The opening number, "Dance on a Volcano," almost deliberately recalls "Cinema Show" from Selling England by the Pound in melody and structure, and Phil Collins sounds more like Peter Gabriel than Gabriel himself did. Tony Banks' and Steve Hackett's "Entangled" was the prettiest song the group had recorded up to that time, a gossamer-textured piece about sleep and dreaming in which a strummed acoustic guitar makes its most prominent appearance ever on a Genesis song, supported by the sweetest singing of Collins' career. Not all of the material is in league with these two songs, but all of it has some moments of tremendous beauty, and Tony Banks' "Robbery, Assault and Battery," with its bold, hard-rocking choruses and extended song structure, would have been worthy of inclusion on any of the group's earlier records. Even "Los... Endos," an instrumental finale that ought to be considered a cop-out in the absence of a good song, provides the quartet with an opportunity to showcase its still considerable collective skills to which few fans could object. The 1995 "Definitive Edition Remaster" is a vast improvement in sound and packaging over the earlier CD version and is the one worth picking up. - Bruce Eder, All Music Guide Read more Less
