    I'm Still Listening

    Pros: Subtlety

    Cons: Formulaic

I bought this CD when it first came out. It is now 2006 and I am still listening to these 3 songs: Still She Cries, It's Just The Rain, and Trial By Fire. I just love the textures these musicians all use, the way they play off of each other in th...ese songs. That type of interplay usually comes after playing a song together over and over and experimenting. Steve Smith's drumming is just pure pleasure to listen to, be sure to listen carefully to the cymbal work in It's Just The Rain and Trial By Fire. Sure Neal Schon sizzles on the rock stuff, but listen to his great work on Still She Cries and Trial By Fire. Johnathan Cain plays exactly what is required, and it's beautiful. Simple but damn effective. Ross Valory is perfect as always. I love the lyrics on these songs, absolutely great song writing. Steve Perry polishes it off as only he could. Nobody could do it the same way, try singing it at home and see if you can come close to this type of crooning. Masterful. The song Trial By Fire is so haunting that it has brought tears to my eyes. Just Beautiful. Read more Less

Pros: Awesome Magick by Perry, Cain, Schon

    Cons: None

What can you say, about Trial by Fire other than its an incredible CD. I have almost all of thier Albums/CD being a fan going back to the late 70S and early 80's. I believe this CD is one of thier best, if not thier very best. The Hard rock, Ball...ads and everything in between. The Song "One More" is one helluva song, that sounds somewhat Zeppelinish but with the great vocals of Steve Perry( vocal range and ability to sustian notes is almost magickal) with Niel Schons Guitar playing is and Jonathan Cain Keyboarding is unbelievable. What Band puts out music 17 years After thier Most Succesful Album "Escape" with songs that eclipses most of thier earlier work? Almost None. Where is the creative limit of Perry, Cain and Schon? The Journey Continues with Augeri and Castronovo. But, God how I wish Steve Perry was still with Journey, keep the Dream Alive! Read more Less

Pro Reviews: Trial by Fire

  • All Music Guide

After a tenyear hiatus, Journey returned to recording in 1996 with Trial by Fire, an album that sounds as if no time had passed between it and the band's last album, Raised on Radio. Journey have been completely unaffected by any trend in popular music, whether it's hair metal, hiphop, or alternative rock and, frankly, they're the better for it. Trial by Fire delivers exactly what any Journey fan wants anthemic rockers and sweeping power ballads. Steve Perry sounds as powerful as ever, while Neal Schon's accomplished guitar licks remain as tasty as ever. The songwriting, as before, is slightly hitandmiss, with singles like "When You Love a Woman" and "Message of Love" standing out from the handful of mediocre album tracks. Which means, if you've enjoyed Journey in the past, you're certain to enjoy the best moments of Trial by Fire, but if their arena rock and radioready ballads have never agreed with you, the album will not change your mind.

Biography

Journey

During its initial 14 years of existence (1973-1987), Journey altered its musical approach and its personnel extensively while becoming a top touring and recording band. The only constant factor was guitarist Neal Schon (b. Feb. 27, 1954), a music prodigy who had been a member of Santana in 1971-1972. The original unit, which was named in a contest on KSAN-FM in San Fra... Read more
