Very enjoyable album...Great variety of tunes

The first thing that might grip you about this album is the black Converse high-top sneakers on the cover. I, for one, am a big fan of Converse sneakers, owning a pair of lime green ones myself. Now, these sneakers are standing on a long stretch of a...bandoned highway, with a little bunch of trees off in the far distance, not unlike a little farm in the middle of nowhere, `nowhere' also known as Eastern Oregon. The sneakers are a little worn, as if they've traveled a bit, and they seem as if they are a pair of travelers resting for bit from a long journey. Wow, I just got past the cover! The tunes on this album are in a great variety. The first track: "Kelly Joe's Shoes" is about the converse sneakers. There is a reference to our own Portland, Oregon! The shoes travel around from Portland to Chico, and around the concrete pavement of London, Dublin, and New York to a sandy beach and an airport lounge. They visit a muddy bluegrass festival and then dry off in a friendly kitchen. The song does a bit of traveling along with the shoes. Following this song, "I've Endured" has a very nice clawhammer banjo intro, and some harmonies on the chorus by Darrell Scott. With "Turn the page again," think 'bluegrass meets disco.' "Let Love Take you Back Again" has a sort of country sound to it. Tim O'Brien plays guitar instead of the mandolin on this song, and Dirk Powell plays this piano instead of the banjo, while the percussion lays low in the background. Yes, percussion! "Restless Spirit Wandering" is a rather eerie song, "Another Day" has a very different sound on banjo, as B Read more Less

Traveler arrives like some horseman from the dusty past. His news is blunt, if not apocalyptic, with warnings that the future promises only "rotting flesh and broken bone." His chaps are stained with blood shed during the Civil War, and the trail he's followed from then until now runs alongside the Mississippi before melting into "a road without end" that winds back toward where our memories began. O'Brien lays all this out with help from some impressive players, but even the often incendiary Béla Fleck joins with them in toning down the fireworks and creating evocative settings through the most minimal gestures -- a slow-motion guitar arpeggio, a keening fiddle, a note here or there to complement O'Brien's relaxed delivery. It's significant, perhaps, that the album opens with "Kelly Joe's Shoes," an ode to a pair of beat-up sneakers that gave O'Brien some pretty good mileage, and ends with "Less And Less," which celebrates the joys of moving through life with as little baggage as poss...ible. From music through message, Traveler just about gets it right. - Robert L. Doerschuk, All Music Guide Read more Less

Biography

Tim O'Brien

Tim O'Brien is one of the spearheads of contemporary bluegrass. As co- founder and lead vocalist of Hot Rize and Red Knuckles the Trailblazers, O'Brien served as a bridge between the traditional sounds of the hill country and the modern styles of bluegrass in the 1980s. Since the band's breakup, O'Brien has continued to expand the music's borders as a soloist, a duo pa... Read more
