| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews Broadcast Oblivion's Transmita Olvido asks the age-old musical question: does the world need two Foo Fighters? It also asks the question: when does the grunge revival start? The album starts off promisingly, the first three tracks are energetic and catchy (the loud, soaring and exciting We Burn Away, the hooky Chalk Outlined, False Starts for Blackened Hearts), but it soon gets bogged down in grunge and post-grunge clichés (loud/soft dynamics, the sludgy guitar sound, loud tom tom pounding, the vocal mannerisms) and loses steam quickly. They Live is boring and has some weak screaming vocals, Submersion is a minor key ballad that sounds like it could be on a Queensryche album, Aurora is a sluggish song with very repetitive structure and Is It Raining is a intimate ballad that is wrecked by the upfront, barely in-tune guitars and the lack of a melody. The record is somewhat redeemed by Cut the Cord, a peppy rocker with handclaps and organ. But the fact remains that most of the record is weak grunge by the numbers (answer to question 2: hopefully never) and when it does manage to rise above that, it sounds like the Foo Fighters. (Answer to question 1: one is sufficient.) And apart from We Burn Away, it only sounds like Foo Fighters album tracks.
