They're not exactly household names in the U.S., but in their native England the progressivedub duo of Christine Woodbridge and John Sprosen has built an enviable reputation as one of the most powerful purveyors of modern roots reggae in a country that is not exactly lacking in that department. Alpha Omega's latest find the duo teaming up with a variety of Alist singers and chatters, most notably Gregory Isaacs (on the very fine "Bush Ganja") and the notorious Lee "Scratch" Perry (on the somewhat spastic "Dub Fire"). There are equally worthy contributions from lessfamous names, as well: Reuben Master may have missed the memo about the demise of the Soviet Union, but he acquits himself nicely anyway on the title track and on a strangely affecting bit of rockersstyle preaching titled "Selassie I." There is also a fine, funky sufferer's anthem called "Survivors of the City" featuring a singer named Horace Martin. Through it all, Woodbridge's impossibly dark and heavy bass lines are embroidered over by Sprosen's snaky melodica, and heavy dub mixes rear their fearsome heads on about every other track. A must for all fans of adventurous groove music.
