The Duke - See all The Duke's reviews Lots of hidden little gems (here's a guy who writes 2 songs for every 1 that he releases), but I still say it's only for big Bruce fans (Too much potpourri and sophistication for peon folk). Anyway, I likes that "Zero and Blind Terry" very much. OLD SCHOOL BOSS RULES!!!

Pro Reviews: Tracks
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews For years, decades even, Bruce Springteen was legendary for the amount of recordings he did not release. Every time he cut an album, he recorded a surplus of songs and left some out, not always on the basis of quality, but often because they simply didn't suit the mood of the record. It was inevitable that dedicated fans and collectors would bootleg these recordings, and for many years, he was one of the most popular bootlegged artists, rivaling even Bob Dylan. Dylan released a box set of unreleased songs in 1991, paving the way for the long-overdue appearance of a similar Springsteen set, Tracks, in 1998. Spanning four discs, it isn't entirely devoted to unreleased material -- a few B-sides pop up here and there -- nor is it truly definitive, since it misses a number of key outtakes, plus his original version of "Because the Night," the sole hit for Patti Smith. Instead, the compilation is an unassuming sampling of what's in the vaults, from his early acoustic demos to polished outtakes from Human Touch and Lucky Town. Along the way, there are a number of great songs -- "Bishop Danced" is every bit as terrific as its legend, as are "Thundercrack," "Give the Girl a Kiss," "Hearts of Stone," "Roulette," and many others. Tracks merely offers fans an enjoyably sequenced selection of what was left behind. If the end result isn't as revelatory as some may have expected (even the acoustic "Born in the U.S.A.," powerful as it is, doesn't sound different than you may have imagined it), it's because Springsteen is, at heart, a solid craftsman, not a blinding visionary like Dylan. That's why Tracks is for the dedicated fan, where The Bootleg Series or The Basement Tapes were flat-out essential for rock fans. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |

'Tracks' unites his songs from his long career and divides them in four CDs. At the time at which mythical albums such as Nebraska or Born In The USA were released The Boss found that some songs weren't supposed to be included because he believed they didn't suit the message of the album. So throughout the years he saved old recordings and decided to release them on 'Tracks'.
This album reflects Bruce's progress throughout the years. It starts of with new versions of some of his earliest songs, with a wonderful acoustic guitar replacing the instruments previously used. As CD1 continues you see some true rock n' roll, but more importantly you begin to notice that Bruce is not only a rock artist, but he also goes submerges himself in different styles of music.
CD2 starts with some debatable songs(quality wise) but there are some hidden jewels such as Dont Shut Out The Light. CD3 continues the trend and CD4 highlights Springsteen metamorphosis into not so much a rock artist, but more into a melancholic, composing great songs such as Sad Eyes or The Brothers Under The Bridge.
In conclusion, it can be said that 'Tracks' is aimed at all The Boss's fans, but also at people who are don't know his music very well and would like to learn more. Is this album as good as The River or Nebraska? Probably not, but it is an album that if listened to carefully and unprejudicedly, can inspire the spirits that remainded hidden and were suddenly awakened. ...
