Synopsis: Toys (1992)
Synopis: Robin Williams stars in this surreal antiwar fantasy directed by Barry Levinson (RAIN MAN, DINER). Williams plays Leslie Zevo, the son of a fun-loving toymaker. Leslie and his sister, Alsatia (Joan Cusack,) grew up surrounded by their father's whimsical creations in the fantastic factory that he built. When their father dies, the children find that he has left his beloved business in the hands of his brother, a warmonger general (Michael Gambon), thinking that despite his children's love of the company, they don't have minds for business. Unable to disregard his military sensibilities, the general embarks on his own secret project in an effort to make toys that fulfill his confrontational nature, developing video games for children that actually control live weapons. Upon discovering their uncle's diabolical plan, Leslie and Alsatia set out to stop the general in his tracks and save their father's dream factory from manufacturing lethal weapons. Levinson's interesting social commentary also features rapper LL Cool J as the general's son, Patrick, a military man who specializes in camouflage; and Robin Wright as Leslie's love interest.Features: Toys (1992)

Smoking crack is a state of mind.
, January 30, 2001Reviewer:
Adam - See all Adam's reviews I remember when this film came to town and looking with interest at the poster, which is the same as the video cover. "Laughter is a state of mind" it said as I recall and it had a picture of Robbin Williams mug staring out to the world and it struck me that his facial expression didn't look funny at all. He look liked a comedian trapped inside a monstor that was about to eat him alive. I waited till the film came out on video and my suspicions were confirmed. This movie is a monstor of terrible noise and confusion, of beautiful sets and absolutely no laughter whatsoever. There is a scene in the film where it appears Robin Williams is improvising while sitting at a table with some puppets and it is is the only moment where Williams is allowed to show his humanity. The rest is swallowed up by a beast of design over content, of noise over sense, of LL Cool J over someone with acting abilites.
I absolutely hated this film and I think Barry Levison is a very mediocre director indeed. This film has all the child like innocence of the Gulf War, buy it and say your prayers. ...

Pros: Peter Max-type displays, dialogue, costumes
Cons: the plot IS a little hokey!
This has become one of those "you either love it or hate it" films -- and I, a long-time academic, love it! Sure, it's hokey. But too many people miss the point: it's about fun, warmth, innocence, and joy, all of which are in short supply any more. This makes it the perfect holiday film for children of ALL ages! ...
