    Toys

Pros: Peter Max-type displays, dialogue, costumes

Cons: the plot IS a little hokey!

This has become one of those "you either love it or hate it" films -- and I, a long-time academic, love it! Sure, it's hokey. But too many people miss the point: it's about fun, warmth, innocence, and joy, all of which are in short supply any more. This makes it the perfect holiday film for children of ALL ages!

Smoking crack is a state of mind.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 30, 2001

I remember when this film came to town and looking with interest at the poster, which is the same as the video cover. "Laughter is a state of mind" it said as I recall and it had a picture of Robbin Williams mug staring out to the world and it struck me that his facial expression didn't look funny at all. He look liked a comedian trapped inside a monstor that was about to eat him alive. I waited till the film came out on video and my suspicions were confirmed. This movie is a monstor of terrible noise and confusion, of beautiful sets and absolutely no laughter whatsoever. There is a scene in the film where it appears Robin Williams is improvising while sitting at a table with some puppets and it is is the only moment where Williams is allowed to show his humanity. The rest is swallowed up by a beast of design over content, of noise over sense, of LL Cool J over someone with acting abilites.
I absolutely hated this film and I think Barry Levison is a very mediocre director indeed. This film has all the child like innocence of the Gulf War, buy it and say your prayers.

    A visual masterpiece

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 10, 1999

Being a filmstudent, this Barry Livingson movie is how I want to make movies. It's funny, it's a fairy tale and it so beautifully shot in an amazing set design. This film is like a moving Magritte painting. I love it I love it I love it!!!!
