Synopsis: Touching the Void (2004)
Synopis: Joe Simpson and Simon Yates set out to climb the west face of the Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. It was 1985 and the men were young, fit, skilled climbers. The west face, remote and treacherous, had not been climbed before. Following a successful three-and-a-half-day ascent, disaster struck. Simpson fell a short distance and broke several bones in his leg. With no hope of rescue, the men decided to attempt descent together with Yates lowering Simpson 300 feet at a time in a slow, painful process that could have potentially been deadly for both. One further misstep led to Yates unknowingly lowering his injured partner over the lip of a crevasse. With the gradient having gone from steep to vertical, he was no longer able to hold on. Certain they were about to be pulled jointly to their deaths, the only choice was to cut the rope. How Simpson survived the fall, and made it back to base camp is a story that will astound and inspire. In Touching the Void, Yates and! Simpson return to the Siula Grande for the first time to retell their story.Features: Touching the Void (2004)

Cons: would be nice if they spent 5 mins on the hike -out
I have read this book 6 times or more and it ironically helped me get started on my mountaineering career. When it came out, I was suprised that it captured my imagination and emotional responses to each harrowing scene even tough I new what was about to happen next. There are a couple of new details in the movie that are not in the book (The bit about the song in the end (no more details provided to prevent spoiling it).
This movie/story should be enjoyable to everyone, not just those interested in climbing. The story is stunning (and true) and the cinematography surpurb. A friend who saw it siad that he wished they spend a few minutes on the hike out, which is a valid point, but perhaps this is in the DVD extras, or maybe you'll just have to go borow the book from the library. ...

Pros: Great Story Telling
Cons: Too short
The movie is a BOMB. I do some climbing myself and it's just blows me away how Joe survive his journey. I highly recommend this movie. There were moments that you wanted to cheer Joe on. I still think what Simon did, cutting the rope, was the right thing to do. I would have done the same thing. I would not like to be in that situation to make such a choice. ...
