    'Totally' Entertaining

I'm sure I'll be attacked for this, but the TOTALLY HITS series has always trumped over the mindless NOW series. As now glorifies mostly the bubblegum crowd with medium to low attention spans, the TOTALLY HITS series grabbed better songs from the sam...e artists. On TOTALLY HITS 2001, the album starts with another smash male-bashing R&B single "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)" by Blu Cantrell, which is an excellent choice cut, although Sunshine Anderson's "Heard It All Before" should've followed that song. Then you got the catchy tunes by 112 "Peaches & Cream," Missy Elliot's funky "Get Ur Freak On," Outkast's classic "So Fresh, So Clean," and Ludacris & Shawna's sizzling "What's Your Fantasy."The biggest surprises, though, are the remixes. Alicia Keys & Busta Rhymes's "Fallin'," and Dream & Kain's "This Is Me" is surprisingly much better than their originals. It's only P.Diddy's stale "Bad Boy For Life," O-Town's super-sappy "All or Nothing," and Willa Ford's innocuous "I Wanna Be Bad" that prevents this album from reaching perfection. Though the classic highlights will always be Usher's "U Remind Me" (thankfully they didn't use the forgettable and dismissive "U Got It Bad") and Craig David's "Fill Me In" every time I hear the album. This comes across based on several of the greatest singles of 2001: Blu Cantrell's undeniable "Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops)," Missy Elliott's unavoidable "Get Ur Freak On," Usher's cloying but effective "U Remind Me," Uncle Kracker's great Kid Rock-meets-James Taylor "Follow Me," Sugar Ray's terrific rewrite of "Every Morning" in "When It's Over," LFO's best song, "Every Other Time," Outkast's sly, funky "So Fresh, So Clean," Dido's soothing "Thank You," and, if you're generous, the remix of Alicia Key's "Fallin'," which would have made more sense if it had been featured in a version without Busta Rhymes. When second-tier singles like Dream's "He Loves U Not" follow-up, "This Is Me," Puff Daddy's silly comeback as P Diddy on "Bad Boy for Life" (let me reiterate -- no real bad boy could possibly be called something as sissy as P Diddy, even if that's what Biggie allegedly called him), Willa Ford's teen-slut anthem "I Wanna Be Bad" (the fact that her album doesn't have a parental advisory poi...nts out the inherent flaw in parental advisory stickering), Craig David's Brit-hit "Fill Me In," and Toya's "I Do" (not really a hit, but really good all the same) are added into the equation, this winds up as a great snapshot of the state of pop in 2001. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide Read more Less
