Tony Scott: Biography

Tony Scott

The younger brother of British filmmaker Ridley Scott, Tony Scott attended London's Royal College of Art, then entered the film industry as a TV and commercial director. His first feature film was The Hunger (1983), a horror picture that offered the spectacle of a love scene between aging roué David Bowie and female vampire Catherine Deneuve. Scott became "box office" after the success of Top Gun (1986), a dramatically empty but visually fascinating tale of student pilots. After the sequel to Beverly Hills Cop and the Top Gun-like Days of Thunder, Scott made a strong return with True Romance (1993), an acceptable film based on a gore-laden Quentin Tarantino script; and in 1995, with uncredited script assistance by Tarantino, Scott scored another success with his nuclear-sub thriller Crimson Tide. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
