The fourth game in Activision and Neversoft's seminal skateboarding series is designed to bring additions and refinements to the already polished gameplay that's made Tony Hawk's Pro Skater one of the most important video game franchises of its time. Many of these improvements are in line with advances made in earlier THPS sequels, while others may come as a surprise to longtime fans of the series.

Environments are designed to seem even larger and more interactive in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, with less worry over time limits and more emphasis on exploration. The game also adds new tricks to the pro skaters' repertoires, allowing huge, point-packed combos. The transitional "spine transfer" allows skaters to string together lines of multiple big-air tricks. Players can pop off of moving cars and other interactive elements of the game's diverse levels with new finesse.

Perhaps the biggest departure from the winning format established in earlier titles is in THPS4's Career mode. Instead of speeding through timed runs to complete discrete mission goals, as in previous releases, objectives in this game are further integrated and delivered in the context of the levels themselves. Free of conventional time limits, pro skaters can explore each environment more thoroughly, stopping to talk with the many characters they meet. It's often these NPC characters who will assign the level goals, allowing for more personal, role-playing-style motivations and rewards.

A well-stocked skate shop offers a place for the pros to spend their hard-earned cash and an assortment of mini-games brings variety to the basic gameplay. As in earlier versions of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, this 2002 release also includes editing modes that allow gamers to customize their own skater avatars and design their own skate parks. ~ T.J.     If you like any of the other Tony games, then definitely buy this. It is by far the best Tony Hawk game. Instead of running around each level trying to get everything done in a 2 minute time limit, there are no time limits, and you have to talk to pe...ople so they can give you an objective. Some objectives have time limits, and the objectives are a lot funner,and more creative than in the other Tony Hawk games. There are 190 goals in all, and you only have to complete career mode once instead of the tedious way of doing the goals again with every skater. Career mode is also tougher than ever. Since I am an expert Tony Hawk player, it only took me four days to complete career mode, although beginners and people that are okay at it will find it a lot more challenging and will take them a lot longer to complete it. For example, in Tony Hawk 3, the highest pro score is 500,000 points. In here, the highest is 1.5 million! Also, each pro player has one pro challenge they can do, some are things they have actually done in real life. For example, Tony Hawks pro challenge is to transfer and do tricks between two half pipes. Andrew Reynolds pro challenge is to do tricks while jumping over big gaps,and with Bam Margera you get to ride around in shopping carts. Completing each pros pro challenge will also unlock that skaters movie. The soundtrack has 35 songs from rappers and bands like NWA,Run DMC,System Of A Down,AC/DC,Iron Maiden,and The Offspring. So, if you liked any of the Tony Hawk games, buy this, it is worth you money. Read more Less

    This game is fun. While I didnt think the graphics were ground breaking, the playing enjoyment factor makes up for it. Lots of things to do will keep you occupied and you will see yourself improve upon your tricks and skills as the game progresses. N...ot too shabby. Read more Less
