Based on a horrifying true story from World War II and adapted from the autobiographical book by survivor Ernest Gordon, TO END ALL WARS tells the brutal tale of a group of Scottish soldiers who discover just how evil war can be. Major Campbell (Robert Carlyle), Gordon (Ciaran McMenamin), Dusty (Mark Strong), and American Lieutenant Reardon (Kiefer Sutherland) are captured by the Japanese. Beaten, starved, and brutalized, they are then forced to work on the "Railway of Death," building track through an impossibly dense jungle. David L. Cunningham's film focuses on the battles within each individual soldier, adding even more gravity to the picture.

    Incredible Movie

Pros: Gripping drama; will prompt healthy self-inventory

Cons: difficult to watch at times, due to (non-gratuitous) violence

One of the best movies I've seen; does what movies should do more often, in that it not only delivers great drama but also provokes one to think about his or her life.

An Unexpected Treasure of a Film

Pros: a powerful message, and an excellently told story

    Cons: some graphic violence

I definitely didn't expect the magnitude of this movie when I rented it. It's definitely buy-worthy. To End All Wars is based on the true story of Ernest Gordon, a man taken prisoner during WWII by the Japanese. The story of his survival and ...his fellow POW's were able to find, indeed, become the source of hope in the bleakest of natural circumstances is both heart-breaking and inspiring. There's a lot of truth to be found in the message this movie communicates. I went back and read the book and found the movie to be relatively accurate. The only places it takes a few liberties is in condensing the true stories of many prisoners in different camps into one cohesive narrative of one particular Japanese prison camp. Read more Less
