Time of Your Life/A Farewell to Arms (1948)

H. C. Potter supplies heart-tugging direction in the film version of William Saroyan's Pulitzer Prize-winning ensemble piece, TIME OF YOUR LIFE (1948), which focuses on the various characters who populate Nick's Saloon, Restaurant and Entertainment Palace, a waterfront dive in the toughest section of San Francisco. There's Joe (James Cagney), a champagne-soaked "philosopher"; a bull-slinging American Indian; a would-be dancer; a prostitute named Kitty (Jeanne Cagney) who dreams of white picket fences and a lawn; and Joe's handyman, Tom (Wayne Morris).

Frank Borzage's drama A FAREWELL TO ARMS is the highly acclaimed film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's 1929 novel about the poignant, ill-fated wartime romance between an American paramedic and an English nurse in WWI. This skillfully crafted film features Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes, two of the premiere stars of 1930s Hollywood, doing excellent work in the lead roles.
