The best thing about it is the story, which is well written and works well with an animated format. The end is a real surprise.
My favorite characters are these small, Michelin Man-type aliens that Jaffar rescues. They hatch from enormous, floating seed pods which release their 'babies' once every 1000 years or so, and were trapped. They seem to be empathic and telepathic, but find human behaviour really odd. They are cute.
The alien worlds are fantastic and unlike many animated films, there is a lot of consistency. The planet Perdedes(?) is particularly good and nearly avoids looking like a Yes album cover, which many animated sci-fi films do.
There are communal aliens, telepathic aliens, vicious, flesh/brain eating aliens, etc.
It is also similar to another award-winning animation short called "Sky Whales", which has a similar disturbing feel and a cyclic end/beginning.
I don't know what children would think about it. It is quite a ponderous animation, but the story requires this.
I imagine that if you like sci-fi, you'll like this. However, my memory is rather clouded, because I saw it a while ago. But I'm going to buy it nevertheless. ...
