Pros: Trust In Me, The Passenger, Hall of Mirrors, Wheels On Fire
Cons: All remakes but created in that unique Siouxsie flavour
There weren't many complaints from the release of this album from the critics. Crafting each of these remakes into masterpieces of the Sioux catalog. Not an ounce of thought was waisted in the crafting of this album. Each song may have been a popular song in the past but this band breathes new life into every track. Carefully constructed in that unique Siousie style makeing some songs such as Wheels on Fire even better than the orginals and proved to be a massive hit in the UK. Covers from Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit" and Disney's "Trust me Me" (The Jungle Book) will haunt you in versions that only Siouxsie could convey. This album may not be typical of the formative works of Budgie and Siousxie but it is definately worth owning. Tracks to download: "This Wheels On Fire", "Trust In Me", "Hall of Mirrors", "The Passenger" as well as the Siouxsie and The Banshees side project: The Creatures "The Weather Man" and many other tracks.
Well, Siouxsie is certainly indeed my favorite female singer. She is so ironic in her lyrics and music and does not care one bit if it pleases anybody. Even with The Creatures's albums she sticks to the same formula. This is why it's so hard for the listener to understand what Siouxsie's lyrics mean. WHO CARES? She's wonderful anyway! :)
This is my favorite of all records, next to "The Rapture". The music did start to sound more alternative/pop from the late 70's/early 80's and continued to remain the way the band was during that time.
For anyone who's also into Siouxsie & The Banshees, listen up! You want to hear these tracks. 'This Town Ain't Big Enough' is the most powerful opener I've heard and will immediately get you hooked to that Siouxsie woman. :) She does a good version of Bob Dylan's 'This Wheel's On Fire'. This is also the first album that brass is incorporated (you can also hear brass on The Creatures's "Boomerang"). You can find it on 'Strange Fruit' and 'The Passenger'.
You'd also love the haunting melody 'You're Lost Little Girl'. THIS is what I mean about Siouxsie being ironic and keeping us music listeners guessing what's up her sleeve. 'Gun' is also powerful when she tinges into a bit of a western voice in the first verse. 'Sea Breezes' is also a haunting melody. So you'd BETTER listen to this album if you're a newcomer to Siouxsie & The Banshees. Don't forget to also pick up the albums from Siouxsie's side project, The Creatures (there are approximately 5 albums from the latter).
