Pro Reviews: This Old House Has Got to Go
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews In name, This Old House Has Got to Go recalls Stuart Hamblen's career hit "This Ole House," but it actually refers to a new song about a freeway cutting through a family's homestead. Hamblen is a creative and original songwriter, and this album is full of interesting songs like "Green Ice and Mountain Men" -- which hearkens back to the Yukon theme of his 1961 album The Spell of the Yukon -- and "The Hangin' of Old Zeb Hatfield," about a slippery criminal who can't be brought to justice. Hamblen's narrative songs resemble, in content and production, dramatic quasi-folk songs, such as Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John" and Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons," which makes This Old House Has Got to Go a welcome find for fans of that style. - Greg Adams, All Music Guide |
