Pros: Love Beauty Intelligence put to music

    Cons: None

Unfortunately, I discovered Emily two years after she had passed away. My first introduction to her in 1992 was "East and Wes" - I must say, I didn't get it at first, but gradually understood what she was saying, and have since collecte...d everything she has done. Being a guitarist myself, my love for her stems from one quality she possessed that few others on the planet have seemingly achieved - she did not waste a note. Every musical statement is well-defined, clear, concise, precise, and most important - provocative. I can't name one clunker she recorded. Sadly, I don't know enough about her personal life, but the concensus has been she was a beautiful person, and this shows in her music, especially "This Is Me", her most personal statement. From the thought provoking opening 'Deep in a Trance' to the melodramtic 'Love Colors' to the hot-and-spicy 'Carenia' to the acoustic closing of 'Second Childhood', Emily said more in 56:37 than most people will say in a lifetime. Joy, exuberence, sadness, passion ... It is the best book on love/life I have ever read and re-read. She achieved her goal of being a world-class composer, and her technical art, while impeccable, never over-shadowed her musicality - she nailed everything. Emily, I love you. Read more Less

I absolutely LOVE this cd! I stumbled across it in a music store and purchased it with knowing anything about Ms. Remler except that she played the guitar. My first reaction was...WOW!!! I have been a loyal fan every since. She is a true legend to me.... Read more Less

Pro Reviews: This Is Me

  • All Music Guide

Emily Remler's first -- and tragically, her last -- excursion into electric jazz-pop indicates that she could have become a strong force in that area had she not died. Though Remler's Concord recordings earned her a great deal of respect in hard bop circles, she felt limited creatively and was quite anxious to experiment in the electric realm. On her final session, This Is Me, the guitarist incorporates pop and rock elements on her own terms -- maintaining her musical integrity and avoiding radio-oriented smooth jazz drivel altogether. What remains constant is the warm and lyrical nature of her playing. While the influence of Wes Montgomery and Herb Ellis remains, some of these pieces indicate that she was paying close attention to Pat Metheny.

Biography

Emily Remler

Emily Remler's death at age 32 from a heart attack (certainly not helped by her frequent use of heroin) was a shock to the jazz world, and a sad waste. She was just beginning to emerge from the Wes Montgomery influence and develop her own voice. Remler began playing guitar when she was ten, attended Berklee (1976-1979), and recorded as a leader for the first time in 198... Read more
