In 1976, British prog rock/jazz fusion veteran Charles Hayward (Quiet Sun, the Amazing Band, Gong; percussion, keyboards, vocals) formed the more experimental This Heat with Charles Bullen (guitar, viola, clarinet, vocals) and Gareth Williams (bass, guitar, keyboards, vocals).
