Cruel Intentions

Equaled Only By Its Predecessor

Rev. Cody C. Gaisser - See all Rev. Cody C. Gaisser's reviews Alright. Let's dismiss the misconceptions from the start. Anyone expecting This Desert Life to sound like the party-rock pop gem Henginaround is sorely mistaken. Keep in mind that the band's second single was an uncut version of the 11-minute epic "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby." This song is easily the Counting Crows most lyrically satisfying song. Sort of. That doesn't mean its really satisfying in a feel-good happy sort of way. It's actually one of the most cynical, depressing things I've ever heard in my life. However, the poetic structure (or lack thereof) is reminiscent of Bob Dylan in such a non-plagiaristic way that this song can move you in ways you will not expect. "Amy Hit the Atmosphere" is a great sad little pop tune with murky pianos and glistening sitars. This song introduces Duritz's catch-phrase of the moment "rocket ride," which he will undoubtedly use throughout the album. "Four Days" is an equally good track with great chorus harmonies. "All My Friends" and "High Life" are stormy little tracks in which Duritz rants about his personal problems. "Colorblind" of all the tracks sounds perhaps the most personal and definitely the most damaged. Its tempo flutters up and down at will and trippy pianos lines build and crumble under the weight of the song itself. "I Wish I Was a Girl" is one of Counting Crows most enjoyable pop songs. Well at least it seems to be a pop song. However, under the upbeat chime of music there are dark veins of tormented verse that reveals Duritz's true sense of poetic irony. Speedway is a slighly less powerful sentimental track the is powered by Bryson's four-string guitar work. "St. Robinson In His Cadillac Dream" is a great roots rock song as well. Wait around for the secret track. It is well worth it. This album's production remains both slick and minimal at the same time, a true miracle of modern production. There are no production flaws so to speak, yet at the same time the album hangs onto a certain roughness. This album is a masterpiece and a must-own album. ...

Pro Reviews: This Desert Life
| EXPERT RATING: From AMG Reviews It's likely that critics and listeners will consider Counting Crows' long-delayed third album, This Desert Life, another retro effort by a traditionalist band, but it's actually their most individual and finest album yet. All the familiar elements are in place, from Adam Duritz's impassioned vocals and cryptic lyrics to the jangling instrumentation, but the laments gel better than ever before. Part of it undoubtedly has to do with David Lowery and Dennis Herring's organic production, which keeps the rough edges in place, helping the music to breathe, but the real success of the record is due to the band themselves, who have matured gracefully. They may have spent a long time recording this album, but the music feels natural and immediate. Upon closer inspection, the craft really shines through. The songs are tight, with strong hooks on the choruses, and nice, memorable melody lines; the arrangements may be earthy, but they're never cluttered. Most importantly, Duritz has reigned in his tendency to overwrite and over-emote, turning in his best sets of songs to date. But the best thing about This Desert Life is that it holds together as a cohesive album while providing the best individual songs in the band's catalog. And that just doesn't mean the best singles, although "Hanginaround" is their finest uptempo number to date; the album tracks are consistently compelling, ranging from the winding narrative of "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" to the measured ballad "Speedway." These subtle differences -- the confident performances, cohesion, and assured songwriting -- add up Counting Crows' strongest album to date. They may still recall rock giants, but only in the best possible way -- by crafting an album that ebbs and flows like the best classic rock records. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |
