    The Angelic Band of Demons

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 12, 2006

    Pros: everything

Cons: only that they dont have more material

Basically, listening to this group seriously for the first time revolutionized my musical preferences. The physical and psychological work that must have gone into creating such uniquely artistic band such as this one is simply awe inspiring. Investing in Tool's and APC's CDs will change the way you think if you are truly in tune with the spirit of their music. Definitely not a regretted $13 spent.

I just have to say; buy it and listen to it, it won't come out of your stereo or your car CD player for years. In fact you better buy 2 copies so your not switching all the time.

Thirteen steps in the right direction

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 25, 2003 | 1 out of 1 found this Thirteenth Step review helpful

Pros: all of the "THE" songs

    Cons: too short

With “Thirteenth Step” the guys in APC have managed to surpass all that’s ever been created in the realm of progressive metal. The album sends you on a dimly lit journey within yourself, forcing you deeper into your subconscious. Each song aids you along an emotional quest that leaves you needing more.
Keep an eye out for their tour this fall. Highest possible recommendation!

Pros: You just have to experience it for yourself...there's no explaining it.

Cons: The first track threw me off a little bit. But it's one of my favorites, now.

    Shut up.

    Close your eyes.

    And listen.

This album breezed into my top 5 favorite albums of all time. And I'm definately not one to loosley throw that arround. I have been referred to as a musical nazi before, because I only like the best stuff out there and think that everything else should be tortured and expirimented on. I must warn you...enter into the realm of this album with no expectations. Pretend you don't even know who Maynard James Keenan is and just listen to it as though it were a beautiful painting that you can so readily get lost in. If you want to go on a glorious journey through your own thoughts, buy this album and just listen.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 16, 2003

Pros: lyrics, harmony, guitar.... etc etc

    Cons: leaves you wanting more

    strange and beautiful.

the lyrics have an amazingly subtle way of being incredibly deep and moving when appropriate and somewhat confusing and light at other times. Softer emotional tracks, mixed with harder angrier tracks. Maynard’s voice is haunting – taking on both masculine and feminine qualities. great use of rhythm, mood, guitar. a perfect balance. nice to hear a softer bass unlike Tool which by the way is totally different music from APC unlike some critics claim. (who hires these music magazine critics?)Tool is harder, sharper, left brain, more masculine... APC is softer, rounder, right brain, more feminine and earthy (the drumming in the package like a heartbeat).

If you’re looking for an album to bring itself to you, straightforward and apparent - wrong album.
If you’re looking for something deeper, something artistic and available to your own interpretation of not only lyrics and music but also sound - you’ve got it. This band is not looking to reduce itself to please anyone. If you don’t agree you may have been too straight while listening.

I do agree that it seems as though the album is missing an element, however it far exceeds almost every release this year and it seems more as though this is part one to a two-part compilation. Eager to see what’s next.

Brilliant album. I broke my promise not to buy records from RIAA supported labels to pick this one up.

Still hope the RIAA drops dead.

    Buy this CD anyway ;-)

Cons: ...could be a little heavier

From "The Package" all the way to "Gravity", one of the best albums I've ever heard. You cant even compare this album to "Mer De Noms" because they're complete opposites, which is hard for some bands to do in just 2 albums. Great sound, great lyrics, great album.

Thirteenth Step is the "Dark Side of the Moon" of modern rock. Music more beautiful than you would have ever expected. Maybe the only thing better than Maynard's lyrics is how he sings them. My words can't describe how wonderful this CD is. If you don't like this CD you might as well be deaf.

A Step Down From Mer de Noms

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 30, 2003

Pros: Haunting music on tracks 3,4,5, 9

Cons: shift to heaviness, silly lyrics

Thirteenth Step is one of those rare sophomore albums that manages to step away from a band’s debut and take hold on a new sound. With their second album, APC has taken a step away from its melodic core with the departure of two original members. However, in the process of gaining two new influences, the band has lost much of its musical soul.
Paz Lenchantin’s departure has robbed the band of its delicate, vulnerable femininity. Songs like “3 Libras,” “Breña,” and “Orestes” from Mer de Noms have been left behind for the new, heavy sound of “Pet,” “Weak and Powerless,” and “The Outsider.” The only fragments of the original soul can be found in the haunting ballad “Noose” and the album ender “Gravity.” “Noose” is a masterpiece of the new line up, expanding on the sound of Mer de Noms and gently adding the heaviness of Thirteenth Step. “Gravity” is a leftover from the old line-up; beautfiul but unfortunately sounding like a throw-away track left off Mer de Noms.
With the line-up change, APC has become entirely male, causing the band to become beefy and heavy. Paz has been replaced by the loud dull bassist from Marilyn Manson, Jeordie “Twiggy Ramirez” White. Her violins have been pre-empted for synthesizers and generic guitar. This is a huge leap toward the masculinity of Mer de Noms’ first single, “Judith,” a generic formulaic pothole in the flow of Mer de Noms.
Songs with the potential to be peaceful art rock masterpieces are weighted down by droning guitars and heavy bass that are more painful than pleasurable. In “Pet,” even singer Maynard James Keenan, of Tool fame, has changed left behind his beautiful crooning and leaned toward ravaging Tool styling.
This leaves much to be desired from the songs on this new album. Though obviously musically lacking, even the lyrics of this new CD have taken a step down. Once haunting, the lyrics have become more obscure than though-provoking. Deep lyrics should inspire thought, but lyrics like “someone feed the monkey while I dig in search of China, white as Dracula as I approach the bottom” from “Weak and Powerless” are more silly than entertaining.
In addition, the album is reminiscent of Mer de Noms in that it has a sudden change with an out-of-place track. In place of Judith, this album has “The Nurse Who Loved Me,” a cover of a Failure track. This song has some of the most laughable metaphors even included in a song. Instead of being drawn into the echoes of Maynards vocals, a listener is going to fall backwards giggling at the line “Say hello to the apples on the ground. They were once in your eyes but you sneezed them out while sleeping.”
Though it clocks in at 50 minutes, this album feels exceptionally short due to the disappointing lack of ballads. APC is heading in the wrong direction. Instead of moving toward an enhancement of the ambience of Mer de Noms, APC is taking a strong step toward a mainstream bastardized version of Tool.

If there's any album that I'm glad I bought this year it's definately this one.I was devistated considering it took me a week from the release to finally get a hold of it,but I haven't listened to any other cd since I got it.This cd will be stuck in my cd player(s) forever.Maynard's voice is so beautiful and full of emotion that it brings out my emotional side.Billy's guitar makes me close my eyes and drift away into my mind. The basslines make my body move and I can't help but dance. My feet and body move so much when Josh's drum beats come in,his experimenting with this album is spectaculor. This blend of amazing musicians is perfect and I hope that they stick with the current line up.The chemistry is unlike any I have seen with other bands in an onstage performance. All I can say is if you haven't heard this album it's a must.

i saw a perfect circle live and knew i was in for a ride when i bought the cd. it was just so beautiful. i like to describe it as picturesque and grotesque. the song as so pretty and imaginitive while the lyrics are alittle suspicious. i love the balance of the two extremes. a very beautifully done album.

I've been waiting a long time for this!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 25, 2003

    Pros: Too many to list

    Cons: None I can think

I was delayed in getting my copy of Thirteenth Step (inexcusable I know, it's a long story... ) but having now got my grubby little mits on it I've listened to it 5 times in a row so far and am about to set off on my sixth journey.

No, it's not another Mer de Noms, and being as that has been the over-played, addictive cream of my cd collection with very little competition since the day it was released, I honestly didn't think Thirteenth Step had a hope in hell in my affections.

How wrong can a person be!! I am hopelessy, pathetically, devotedly in love all over again. What an amazing collection of... I would say songs but that's understating the fact too far... thought provoking, heart rending words set to haunting music by the voice of an angel? Yes, that's better. The voice may be that of a fallen angel but it's perfection is undiminished for that.

It's too soon to disect the album song, by song. In fact I may never want to do that. The whole is a masterpiece best not divided, in my very humble opinon.

I am, all over again, besotted by the deep, arousing, mixed-up world of emotion that is APC.
