Pro Reviews: There's Always Someplace You'd Rather Be

  • All Music Guide

There's Always Someplace You'd Rather Be takes a heavy influence from shoegazing, but not in the plush, dreamy My Bloody Valentine sense -- the album's seriously fuzzed-out guitars have the white-noise quality of Medicine, only much more so. The album forms this sound into rather lovely pop songs on roughly half of its tracks, with the remainder exploring a unstructured wash of sound that sometimes mirrors the texture of Slowdive's Pygmalion (in much the same way Sianspheric's Somnium does) -- for the most part, the pop songs fare much better, taking the defining approach of shoegazing to its logical extremes.
