Bassist and singer Thelma Terry was one of the first women to take the lead of her own jazz orchestra. Born Thelma Combes to a poor family in Chicago, at age 18 Terry was already playing first chair in the Chicago Women's Symphony Orchestra. She was a student at Austin High School, and many of the so-called "Austin High Gang" served at one time or another in Thelma Terry's band.
