Pros: 2000 Man, She's A Rainbow, 2000 Light Years
Cons: Gomper
This Album is Not As Bad As Most people say it is. After a few listenings you'll love it
THE STONES RULE!
It was a turbulent time for the Stones, spending a few months on remand for a drug bust in 1967, and the emerging hippy cult. In between all of this, they managed to turn out this drivel, but it was an excuse to emulate the psychadelic mania that was popular at the time. It never really worked, and the Stones must have been well aware of it, when a year later they returned to form with "Jumping Jack Flash".

Some good tunes, but mostly contrived nonsense far inferior to the Beatles.
With multiple listenings, this album grows on you...as long as you're not looking directly at the cover. This is one of their most brilliantly zany recordings. Without it we would have no 'She's a Rainbow,2000 light years from home,citadel,2000 man(which even KISS felt worthy to cover, o.k. it has it's stinkers (I don't think i've ever listened to 'Gomper' all the way through) but 'Sing this song all together' and 'On with show' shows that they don't limit themselves into any 'fixed' catagory...they needed this album as a stepping stone to let it be known that they could hold their own against what ever was popular at the time...and in fact while recorded during their most hectic period (with drug busts, court dates, internal divisions, and the complete deterioration of Brian Jones who sparkles on this album) it really is fortunate we have something of this time at all. Plus...I think it's better and rocks 'harder' then anything they did up to that time. And we even have a song by Bill...as a plus. The only thing that mirrors the Beatles about this record is the cover, which is just them doing what was 'IN' at the time...the Beatles were influenced by the psycadelic approach of the California west coast boom of '66...so they weren't as 'Original' as they would have liked it to be known...they were just copying the 'Filmore West Posters to a certain degree!!! The music is pure Stones 1967. and that is all that matters...don't judge a book by it's cover.
The Stones should never have made this album. Its not simply the they unoriginally copied the Beatles in itself, but that they plagiarised the work of a band who were so obviously inferior to them. This album was a travesty and a deviation from the great rhythm and blues based rock the Stones had turned into a fine art. Brian Jones looks decidedly uncomfortable on the cover here, having to wear the stupid hippy costumes. None of the tracks on this album appeared on HOT ROCKS, nor any of the hits compilations of the period. Luckily the Stones rediscovered their ability to rock, started getting into country and gospel, and wrote BEGGARS BANQUET next, while simultaneously laying down a harder rocking sound which would predate their greatest work from 1968-78. But this album is definitely forgettable.
THE ROLLING STONES ARE ABOUT A MILLION TIMES BETTER THAN THE BEATLES
Gee, who were they copying, could of been the Beatles, you got it! A pathetic record. Even Mick jagger himself hated it. He even said that Pepper was much more superior. Not one good song on this record. They were so much better in the 70's.
With the exception of "She's a Rainbow" and "2000 light years from home", which are good recordings in their own right, The Stones' attempt at a psychedelic album in the vein of "Sergeant Pepper's" was badly concieved and realized.
This record is much better than its reputation. When I bought this album, the guy working at the CD store tried to talk me out of it. I didn't listen to him, and you shouldn't listen to anyone who hands you the same line. This is a record well worth owning. Trust me.
u know if it wasn't for the beatles, this record wouldn't have been made. However its still an excellant record
there are some moments of glory "hear"
