Bee Gees Greatest Hits: The Record

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 15, 2003

The first of 2 CD's I did not like. I did not recognize any of the songs. I find it hard to believe they were hits let alone even know them. I did not like the words or the music.
The second CD is excellent! All the songs you know and love! It's the Bee Gees as we know them! It's great! Thanks.

They are a great vocal group & superb songwriters. It is a shame that the 70's came & they decided to change their style, but yo have to give them credit for writing & recording some of the better disco tunes(if there is such a thing). Their earlier music was Beatle-like & that is a compliment! God rest Maurice.

    A Very Misunderstood Band

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 26, 2002

Although the Bee Gees are constantly being labled as spearheaders of the Disco music scene, it isn't necessarily true. Commercially, doing the soundtrack for Staurday Night Fever was a great move for them, critically it was a mistake. It forever labled them a "Disco Band".

Outside of the Box Set, this is the first Greatest Hits package put out by the Bee Gees that covers thier whole history.

Their early recordings in the late 1960's is very good. It is very folk influenced and would never guess it was the same band that recorded Staying Alive. My particular favorites are New York Mining Disaster and I've Got to Get a Message to You.

After topping the charts in the early 1970's with Lonely Days and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, the band suffer a downhill turn until 1975's Main Course album. The band switched gears musically and thier music became more R & B influenced. Although Jive Talkin' was the #1 hit of this LP, my personal favorite is Nights on Broadway.

After the Main Course LP, the band slipped into thier most sucessful period commercially. Although this isn't my favorite period from them, the music they put out was far better than most of the other "Disco" music that other artists were putting out during the time. I do like some of the songs like Staying Alive and How Deep is Your Love, I'm not fond of Night Fever, Tragedy or Too Much Heaven.

Of course as Disco faded so did the Bee Gees, unfairly becoming the whipping boys of Disco.

If you are a fan of the Bee Gees and looking for a package that covers thier whole career, this is the CD to get. It is very well put together and has all thier big hits.
