Synopsis: The Winter Guest (1997)

Synopis: A dense, filling slice-of-life set in a tiny snowbound Scottish burg, where four pairs of characters grapple with various aspects of human hardship. Thompson plays opposite Law, her actual mother, as a recently widowed photographer whose haze of grief has driven a wedge into their relationship. Rickman's directorial debut, adapted from the stage play by Sharman MacDonald.

   1 of 1 Yahoo! Users found this Winter Guest review helpful Alan Rickman is an excellent actor and I believe he has surpassed himself in his directorial debut in 1997. His movie needs to be more accessible to cable networks. Audiences would benefit by knowing more about the inception and making of The Winter Guest. I hope Mr. Rickman continues his career as an actor, but does an encore in the role of Director. Three cheers Alan, for a job well done.

   If you are after movies that really look
   into the souls of people and give
   something to think about days afterwards,
   this is in that class. Others I put in
   that class are Bergman's "The Seventh Seal"
   and "Groundhog Day" (I know, and odd
   pair, but in the 0.1% of movies I can
   get some self-improvement out of each time).
   
   
   The situations have a real feel and let you
   get to know everyone, and you learn
   something about them at the same time
   they seem to learn it.
   Oddly enough, I found the central story and
   stars to be not quite as real as the others.
   All the stories and pairs tie together
   somehow, and they all tell you something
   about who you were, who you are, and
   who you might be....
   
   Everyone will take something different from the
   final moments, but I took the message that
   having a quest and something to care for
   will carry you through tough times and
   keep you growing. ...
