One of the last great silents!
, April 24, 20021 of 1 Yahoo! Users found this Wind review helpful This is a wonderful film that stars Lillian Gish as Letty, a woman who moves from Virginia to a barren Texas dustbowl town. There she finds herself fighting the raging winds as well as the brutish people that reside there. She marries a man she doesn't really love, kills another who rapes her and has to face raging sandstorms that drive her to the brink of madness. Overall, this is a great film with Lillian Gish turning in a top-notch performance. Lars Hanson & Montagu Love also give commanding performances in their respective roles. Be sure to see this film at least once. ... -
The Wind
, March 13, 2005Reviewer: rogue1291 - See all rogue1291's reviewsPros: The finest silent movie ever made
Cons: Sappy ending, but, still good
I have seen many silent movies and this rates as the best, just ahead of Keaton's "The General". Letty goes out to Texas to live with her cousin and his family, his wife takes an instant dislike to Letty due to unfounded jealousy. Two ranchers, friend's of the cousin take a shine to her, but, she has fallen for the charms of a slimy salesman she meets on the train trip to Texas. After discovering the salesman is married and having been thrown out by the cousins wife, Letty reluctantly marries Lige, one of the ranchers, who worships her, I won't tell you any more of the story, but, the wind of the title is always present and begins to destroy Letty's sanity.
Beautifully acted by all, the stand out performance comes from the swedish actor Lars Hanson as Lige, particularly in the wedding night sequence, his performance is spot on, heart breaking and beautifully understated at times. Lillian Gish gives a stunning performance as well as Letty as does all the cast, due to the fantastic direction from Victor Seastrom. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough and if you get a chance to see it then grab it as for some ridiculous reason this is no longer available on VHS and never has been on DVD. Time for it to be re-issued, preferably with both endings, the original one and the sappy studio ordered one. 5 stars. ...
