More here than meets the eye

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 26, 2006

Pros: Very close to portraying an actual Pagan culture

Cons: The ending was a bit over the top

Most of the reviews here are obviously by people who know little or nothing about the modern reconstruction of ancient Celtic Paganism. They see the community as being full of "psychopaths" or just plain weird. If the Christian Church had not performed its "Spiritual Cleansing" of the ancient Celtic lands, this is pretty much what a modern Pagan community would look like. Human sacrifice is not part of modern Paganism, but is still a central theme in Christianity (the crucifixion). In this movie it is probably intended as a gotcha for anyone who doesn't know what they are watching and are bored.

    WICKER MAN

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 3, 2003 | 0 out of 3 found this The Wicker Man (1974) review helpful

Pros: Sound and picture is good

    Cons: boring movie. Highly overrated.

I honestly don't know what the hype was about this movie, but I found it very boring. The folk singing was in great excess and I found it annoying. A detective ends up on the scene full of psychopaths who practice a very laughable kind of witchcraft/druidism.

I thought the nude scenes were extremely laughable, and people dancing naked making themselves look like stupid fools even more a joke. Now if you like to see naked ladies dance around acting like fools, and love the sound of annoying folk tunes, then by all means get the movie.

Normally I do not like to give away plots, but it is too predictable...man seeks little missing girl, man does not find missing little girl; man ends up being roasted along with a bunch of poor innocent farm animals. Now I found that scene very objectionable--burning innocent animals alive. But that's another source of the overall annoyances this movie presents. The overall movie was: B-O-R-I-N-G.

And lots of annoying folk singing and idiots dancing around naked. yada yada yada... I bought this movie and felt I lost my money. In other words, I spent my money to be bored. ****ALL BECAUSE I READ A BUNCH OF OVERRATED REVIEWS***. Please trust the original reviews that it was one of the worst movies ever made. Oh, and did I mention that it was very boring?..well, just to emphasize my point. I have no idea why it is presented in DVD format.

    The Wicker Man Rules.....

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 3, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this The Wicker Man (1974) review helpful

I only bought this for the packaging(the wooden box) but I decided to watch the movie and I'm telling you it's kinda creepy in a "Trekkies" movie kind of way since there seems to be an air of truth to it. It doesn't feel faked or pompous. It's very entertaining to see someone of such devout belief brought to his knees by the beliefs of others. Now I'm glad I bought it. Granted there are grainy spots in the extended version but given the time and age of the movie its understandable and I don't think it takes away from it. I suggest you buy it. It's a good Sunday afternoon movie. Just very lusty! Too. Woodward gives a solid performance as a man of rock solid belief and utter disgust of the pagans. Christopher Lee, who is always a favorite, puts in a performance the likes of the Jonestown massacre. Just don't drink the koolaid! And not to mention that Anchor Bay has gone all out in its packaging of the limited edition set. I recommend this highly!

This film reminds me of Looking For Mr Goodbar only because they both follow the same format. They both seem like quite meandering dull movies until they reach their absolutely brutal conclusions. The final sequence of The Wicker Man is so utterly unexpected that it changed the way I saw the rest of the film, and have subsequently give it the big thumbs up. Richard Woodward is not the equaliser in this film, the Wicker Man is. Get it and while you're there get Goodbar as well. Strange classics.

    The Wicker Man

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 15, 2001 | 1 out of 1 found this The Wicker Man (1974) review helpful

I agree completely with Gophertortoise's review.

Pre-"Equalizer" Edward Woodward is the mainland cop sent to a small Scottish Isle to investigate the disappearance of a girl. The people of the island know a lot more than they let on and live a lifestyle that would surprise even the most open-minded. A couple of obligatory "stop-the-movie" songs are the only things distract from the action, though they somewhat contribute to the plot. Britt Eklind looks great! I would love to visit the setting where this was filmed, but wouldn't want to be there for the May Festival.

Excellent. Christopher Lee in a non-horror role, extremely well made and with a great soundtrack, and a blow-you-away ending. Top 10 in the Universe.
