Danny DeVito directs this black comedy about a long-married couple in the throes of divorce at the height of the materialistic 1980s, and his second feature far surpasses his first effort, THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN, in style, substance, and comedic impact. Barbara and Oliver Rose were the perfect couple--he was a prominent Washington lawyer, she had a wildly successful catering business, they had a great house, great art, great cars and great kids. But when Barbara begins to wonder about life without Oliver, she likes what she sees and sues for divorce; unfortunately, neither of them likes the prospect of life without their opulent home, and war is waged to determine who will keep it. The pair become increasingly outlandish in their battle tactics, moving from cunning to cruel to outright surreal, and DeVito's camera echoes this mood with its unorthodox angles and movement. DeVito himself narrates the action as Oliver Rose's lawyer, and Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas prove once again their chemistry as a passionately antagonistic couple (ROMANCING THE STONE, JEWEL OF THE NILE).

    Pros: good cast; well acted

Cons: not the kind of subject matter that will appeal to all tastes

Warning: If you loved the the combination of Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito in the often funny movies Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile, don't watch War of the Roses and expect the same kind of humorous adventure. Yo...u'll laugh-- don't get me wrong-- but beware as this is a darkly funny kind of comedy and not one for all tastes. War of the Roses tells the tale of two people (Douglas and Turner) who meet and quickly in love. He is a young attorney in a high profile law firm, fighting for an eventual partnership. She is an energetic and intelligent woman who is highly creative. Before long they are married and after a few years are living in the house of their dreams along with their two children. But I am getting ahead of myself. The movie begins with DeVito, himself an attorney, talking to a man who has apparently come to him for help with his troubled marriage. DeVito tells the man of his friends the Roses, and how serendipitous their relationship was at first, only to ever so slowly decompose and turn into a living hell. Just how this happens is the story of this Black Comedy acted out by Douglas and Turner. There are some moments in this movie that will have you laughing until your sides hurt, but it's a deep-down sad story just the same. DeVito's storytelling has a message that goes along with it. The War of the Roses deserves a look, just be prepared to pay the price for admission. Read more Less

It is funny to see how a couple can go so far to have so much spitefulness for each other.
