Richard Brooks original novel "The Wanderers" was a darker account on an italian highschool gang of the Bronx. The film also set in the last hours of rock & rolls finest hour isn´t a soda-pop ice-creamed colored doo-wop teen-flic either. The Wanderer...s very violent for a film set in the "innocent years" prior Kennedy´s shooting - is still a vehicle which will make the young viewer "feel good", while the book will leave you rather sad or depressed. It might even provoke a thinking of grabbing some old 45rpms and set your life - also a psychological realism - to a doo-wop beat too.The film kicks off when Richie sleeps with Despie, his girlfriend, while 77 Sunset Strip is on TV.Next scene introduces us the Baldies, a gang of shaved off-bricks with ears as Wanderer Joey puts it, when he meets his buddy Turky - who´s off to become a member of the gang.Sadly this was heard by Pee-Wee, the bride of heavyweight Baldie-gangleader Terror, both Wanderers altough one already shaved his head for to be a potential new member of hte Baldies are chased by the gang. They whistle for help, the whistle also distracts concentration of Richie - this will make him a father soon.Richie and Buddy meet in front of Despie´s house to challenge any aggressor in Wanderer county - but when told that it´s the Baldies who are behind Joey & Turky they flea too.But in a backyard they are challenged, and while Joey is shortly before to get a whipping - a new character enters. It´s Perry (Tony Ganios best known for his appearances in the three Porky´s movies) who single handed beats up a bunch of Baldies.Terror who comes (for weight reasons) later onto the scene, decides to take his gang off, rather than to "stomp some ass".In class it comes to an escalation with the blacks, all in the gang of the Del-Bombers.The Wanderers ask other gangs for help, one offers guns, not in the codex which was agreed with the DBs - and the Wanderers stay to their word. The Wongs, a chinese gang, perfect full contact fighters, 27 all with the same last name as Joey tells Perry amazed, say they will join a side when time will come. The Baldies have Roger in their ranks, a black who how not is the cousin of the leader of the DBs - and they take the Wanderers for a walk in Central - where they attach some strings an a bridge for castration reasons to Richie, Joey and Buddy - the strings are too long, Turkey gives a hand - and becomes a Baldie.Sure a long way from todays gang life. The film leads us to Turkys death, after having joined the Marines with the Baldies, he´s been killed by a rival gang. Richie will be unfaithful to Desbie, Perry & Joey run from their wrecked familys - and all that again in the scheme of the last night of innocence a la "American Graffitti" - only much darker. The Wanderers will remain the film on rock & roll gang life, it´s 22 years now, but could not be done better, today, set in 1963.
