    My Favorate

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 16, 2001 | 0 out of 1 found this The Truman Show (1998) review helpful

This movie is great. I makes you think what would happen if you were watched every second of your life. This role was probally tough for Jim Carey because he is used to being humorous. I recomond it for everybody. Most little kids wouldnt understand it fully.

    another side of jim carey

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 22, 2000

this film shows another side of jim carey that acts as normal as he can get compared to his other over acting films. I was surprised at how interesting the film was even when there were boring moments as well as scenes that just made me strangle the bad guys.

    More Hype Than Heart

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 28, 2000

First off, I'm assuming most of you know what this story is about. It's about Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), a man in his mid-twenties, who's entire life has been broadcast around the globe from a studio (a dome, the largest ever built, visible from space) built in Hollywood, CA.

Ok, OK, OK I have to start out by asking the question... "What the HELL was all the hype about this movie for?" Don't get me wrong, I don't regret spending the four bucks to rent this one from Blockbuster, but, come on, talk of Oscar for best picture? (Yeah, maybe when my ex-wife starts payin' child support). Go figure! The fact that it didn't get a nod for a Best Picture Oscar only confirms my suspicions. (Thank you Academy... thank you, thank you, thank you.)

What you've basically got here is a GREAT premise, completely screwed by a script that lacks character development and has more holes in the story line than a block of Swiss cheese. Because of the lack of character development and the gaping holes, it leaves you wondering, "Who the hell would allow this to happen?" Meaning, who in their right mind would allow a corporation to adopt a child for the sole purpose of exploiting him to the nth degree?

Jim Carrey ( Truman Burbank) gives an OK performance, but it is NOT, by far, his best work. He was much more believable in Liar, Liar and definitely more funny. And you see, that brings me back to the point that, The Truman Show lost a lot of the comic edge because of the little demon that ate away at the back of my cerebral cortex saying "Dan, this show is not making sense. Resist the urge to laugh." Don't misunderstand me, I don't think Peter Weir (Director) intended this film to be a barrel of laughs. As a matter of fact, it's quite obvious that it's not. It's just that the m

I thought this movie was just amazing! Poeple that didn't like it were probably looking for a Jim Carrey comedy film and were therefore disappointed. I however, am glad to se Carrey making the transition to drama and loved the movie.

Big Brother now has a sibling

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 12, 2000

The Truman Show is one of the most original, inventive films I've seen for a long time. Yet, for all its laughs at our consumer culture and materialism, it has a very dark heart. Look around you - just like Truman, you're always on camera, in shops, at work, even (thanks to webcams and such like) at home. And unlike George Orwell's protagonist, or even Truman himself, we're all there by choice, a theme Peter Weir explores very well throughout the film - surely all the actors are there by choice? This is a film you can watch again and again and draw deeper and deeper meanings out of. A well-deserved four stars are at the top of this review, they'll tell you everything else you need to know

    exploring the utopian ideal

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Nov 4, 1999

Once again, Peter Weir has used the theme of utopia (as in Witness and The Mosquito Coast) to shed light on the communitarian ideals which constitute the driving force of American society. A brilliant film exploring the power of the media in controling our lives.
