That thing wanted to be US!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 9, 2006

Pros: The eerie soundtrack is a perfect complement to a truly frightening story. The cast is superb, led by Kurt Russell. It ranks among the best sci-fi horror films of all time.

Cons: Some of the puppetry may not excite the minds of younger audiences weaned on digital effects.

John Carpenter has crafted a film of such fear and unease that those prone to nightmares should not watch this movie alone. He and his cast and crew do in this film what the 1951 version featuring James Arness as the Thing could not, that is create a... believable reality that defies its fantastic premise. The acting is great, particularly Russell, who maintains his glibness throughout, in spite of the terror he confronts. While the presence of so many recognizable actors from television and film might put our minds at ease, Carpenter uses that familiarity to his advantage, as we begin to share the suspicion of the players. We endure the bleak landscape and the utter isolation with the characters. We feel their boredom and loneliness, and then we share in their dread. Carpenter's score contributes to that apprehension. He plays with our emotions and each note heightens our anxiety. The dramatic tension builds throughout the film, leading to the climatic battle between man and monster, but the viewer is left wondering whether the terror has really ended. The collector's edition commentary by Russell and Carpenter should not be missed. Read more Less

When scientists uncovered a frozen spaceship only to thaw out aliens' distant cousin. Kurt Russell was great, classic Sci-fi for any DVD collection.

    Awesome Movie!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jun 27, 2002

A very good original horror movie. It may not be original by today's standards but I imagine that when it was released it was one of the first of its kind. Good suspense, horror, and effects for being made in the early 80's. Great cast also help t...he movie. Read more Less

    The Thing

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 29, 2001

John Carpenter faithfully interpreted the shortstory, "Who Goes There?" -- unlike the original, which was made in 1951. A solid cast includes two of Carpenter's "regulars": Kurt Russell and Keith David, plus superb perfor- mances by veteran character... actors, Wilford Brimley and Richard Dysart. It's scarey, and it keeps you thinking, all the way through. A solid, intelligent effort. Read more Less

    This is true paranoia.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 14, 2000

This film is the real reason why John Carpenter is referred to as the master of terror. Halloween is scary, Prince of Darkness has its merits, but the first time you see this you reaaly should sit and watch it with the lights low and your attention ...at full. Who is the Thing? This question will sit at the back of your mind until the end sequence, and even then you may still be wondering about the (almost) survivors. Anyone who claims to love movies should see this film at least once, if only for coclusive proof that a remake can truly surpass the original. Read more Less

    Carpenter's Best

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 31, 2000

I had seen "The Thing" twice in the cinemas and it rocked me whenever I saw it. The setting was superb, the acting cheesy but taut and the special effects was superb. Hey even the soundtracks got me shaking in my seat. Can't wait for the DVD to appe...ar and to be assaulted by the scenes again. Sci-fi butchery and agonizing death scenes, this movie has it all. John Carpenter's Best

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Dec 29, 1999

"The Thing" is John Carpenter's best film, even better than "Halloween". This is a true horror story, stripping away the excess of meaningless sex and other cheesy tropes, focusing on the fear and paranoia of not being to trust you Brother in Arms. ...The setting, mood, and the acting are top notch. It's a shame that Carpenter got crucified for this film. Read more Less
