Slayers Try does justice to the Slayers

The new Slayers, the Try episodes, captures the essence of the Slayers and Next series, with the same hilarious Lina Inverse and her protector, Gourry. This time, led by Filia, a priestess of the Fire Dragon King, and accompanied by Zelgadis and Amel...ia, they set off to prevent the destruction of the world by some prophecy. Though not as good as Slayers Next, which is arguably one of the best Anime series ever made, Try captures the same spark of fantasy.The same characters hold true here, with possibly the exception of Sylphiel, Martina, and Zangulus, who all appeared in the Next series. Xellos, the mysterious priest, is present here, with a more sinister intent for Lina Inverse. Filia and Jillas cover nicely for the missing comic relief, and Valgaav certainly keeps the action going on and on. New characters also pop up, like gods and such, namely Erelogos and Sirius and Olmayze. All in all, a good character combination, though Martina and Sylphiel would have been welcome additions. Basically, the plot is similar to Next, though it has a new spin, and a much more serious disposition than Next. Filia gets a prophecy of world destruction and she turns to of course...Luna, Lina's older sister, but the job goes back to Lina. They set out to save the world from Darkstar, the Dark Lord of the Overworld, and Valgaav, a loyal half-dragon, haf-monster minion of Gaav, the Demon Dragon King and fostering a deep hatred for Lina Inverse. The action never ends, though she never casts the Gigaslave. Slayers try continues the legacy of action, comedy, and magic that makes the Slayers series one of the best series ever made!
