Pros: very good ended good
Cons: none
its a must see here comes johnny
Pros: Incredibly well done. Jack Nicholson is perfect for the part.
Cons: The wife is kind of annoying.
Jack Nicholson is the only person in the world who could play this part. Any of the remakes of The Shining have different actors, and aren't as good. I'm not one to always say this, however, in this case the original is the best. Everything was put in the right spot, none of the scenes had flaws. The only bad thing IN the movie was the actrice playing the wife. She started to get a little annoying near the end, but that doesn't ruin the film at all. She's just a little annoying, that doesn't mean there is any flaw in the film. This is my favorite horror film, it builds up more and more the further the movie progresses. You should definitely go out and buy this whether you like horror films or not. You HAVE to own this movie, it will always remain a great classic. Even as special effects get better, this will stay put one of the best horror films.
Pros: cinematography, sound, cast
Cons: shelly duval
This was S. Kubrick's masterpiece. THose who didn't like this film fail to appreciate a true master at work. Certainly, one of the most monumental works in moviemaking.
The shining is one scary yet cosy movie bcoz of the snowy atmosphere and chilling...Where is this palce shot anyway?
Jack Nicholson stars as a writer agreed to caretake a hotel resort in the mountain alone with his family for vacation and time off to write a book. But was not notified of what emotional effects the hotel has on its occupants. Great version of Stephen King's novel. Jack steals the movie with his performance.
I Just read the book THE SHINING, and saw the movie yesterday-HORRIBLE! I loved the book however.. I'm not sure if Stanley Kubric wrote the book also(i assumed it was a Steven King novel), but if Stanley did the screenwriting, to King's book-he wasn't good AT ALL! It was the worst movie anyway, but based off the book-HA! He changed good parts, and LEFT OUT THE BEST! If you've read the book-what about the parts where the hedge animals attack? what's so friggen scary about a maze? ooo get lost-its scarier if hedge animals move... And then Mr. Holloran got killed! I DON'T THINK SO! and what about Wedy's Broken ribs and leg? and jack just conveniently froze? Instead of him coming through the hotel and telling his son he loved him? and then the hotel burning? And wtf was that dog doing in the bedroom? i could list things for days! This WAS HORRIBLE!
this movie is another classic.5 stars
This movie is extremely well done!
From the beginning, the film subtly builds and builds until the breaking point (in the scene where Wendy reads his manuscript). Then it explodes everywhere with devastating effects! But just when you think it will die down, it builds some more!
This is a gorgeous film. I have never seen such beautiful cinematography. This is an all around great film. One of the truly great horror movies. Kubrick basically re-wrote the script on the genre with this film. Since it's release much of it's content has become clichéd through its use in other films. In many ways this movie mocks the conventional horror film. There are many occasions where the plot builds up the the point you would expect the typical boo or surprise, but Kubrick then side-steps to something else. The terror in this movie does not come from boo's or things jumping out of closets. It is a more realistic attempt to portray what the supernatural might be like. The scary elements come from slow pacing, mood, character development, and an objective camera point of view with the steady-cam. Many people also tend to miss some of the symbolic subtleties of this film. Many complain about the black man dying in the movie when in the book he saves the family. However this is essential to Kubrick's underlying message which is the suppression by white american males of women, children, indians, and blacks. This film also takes time to comment on child abuse, and spousal abuse. As well there is a commentary on the weak female figure who refuses to acknowledge what's happening. All in all this is a movie that works on so many levels. Truly horrifying. Great ensemble cast with toned down performances early, which really accentuate the over the top performances in the latter part. This is definitely a must see. But if you want gore, lots of boos, and rather unrealistic dramatical structure then this is not the film for you.
Classic horror flick, combining suspence and chills in a genuinely frightening film.A film that will always stand the test of time.
This is a really great movie. I think everyone should see it! I can watch this over and over....
I love horror flicks and this is one of my favorites!
I like people when they go especially when they go crazy on their wife and children more people should go crazy.
I loved it. It wasn't too scary to me. Just a few parts like the famous riding down the halls on a tricycle and seeing the two girls that say "come play with us. Forever and ever and ever." That kind of scared me. But the rest was great. I just am getting sick of the black guy dying first. Always. But other than that this movie had an excellent cast, great plot, and good scared and surprises. The ending rules. Great movie.
i think this is the best kubrick film
Hey! it's Kubrick! it's The Shining. I really like the movie more than Stephen King's novel. I really don't like King. The ending of the movie is the best. I think this is such a great horror movie for its brilliant use of suggestion. Evil does exist! A MUST-SEE.
After seeing Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and As Good As It Gets I found out what a great actor he is so I decided to give The Shining another chance. I decided I really like this movie mostly because of him. My favorite part is when Jack as Jack Torrence mimics and makes fun of his wife after she reads the manuscript with the same sentence repeated and she is scared of him. Shelly Duvall irritates me especially during her crying scenes because she snorts like a pig. What I like about The Shining video version I bought is that before the actual film starts there is a documentary about the making of The Shining filmed by Stanley Kubrick's daughter Vivian. With this documentary you find out a little more about the real Jack Nicholson, but Shelly Duvall still irritates me even when she's just herself. There is a touching moment when Scatman Crothers is interviewed. Since I had seen The Shining before I saw Cuckoo's Nest in the past I didn't realize this was the second time for he and Jack to work together I thought it so neat to see him working with Jack again. My favorite song from the movie was "Midnight With the Stars and You" which was playing in the background in one scene of the movie, at the end, and continuing into the closing credits. If you are a Jack Nicholson fan and even if you're not I recommend this movie.

This movie stands as a testament to the power of Kubrick as a visionary cinematic genius. However, no matter how good his visonary skills were it does not make up for the fact that the screenplay fails to capture the essence of the Stephen King novel that it is based on, leaving us with no dramatic tension or reasoning. Jack (Nicholson) looks completely mad from the moment we first see him, so it comes as no surprise when he starts to go beserk with an axe. Wendy (Duvall) is relegated to merely scream a lot and be generaly as annoying as possible so you end up praying someone will kill her, Kubrick certainly wanted to. Danny (Lloyd) is cast to the background to be over shadowed by his lunatic father, removing the heart of of the original novel, and making the story as empty as the hotel itself. Yet, despite all these flaws the movie still stands as something of a masterpiece simply because of Kubricks undeniable genius touch. Just what was he thinking when he allowed the script to be filmed?
No one can dispute that it is now cinematic legend, the scene where Nicholson attacks the bathroom door with an axe and yells "here's Johnny" As cool as it is, to tell the real story, the film needed a far less distinctive actor, to fit with the novel and allow the child to become the focus, for his abilities of which the book and the film is named after. Still, what can you do about it now. "Here's Johnny" I suppose.
It's no secret that Kubrick shot some of his films in a box like format. I guess that's why he didn't think to release The Shining in its original theatrical presentation. There's probably only a small amount of the film that we are missing from not having a widescreen version of The Shining; however, for us die-hard fans of film, someone ought to give us the original aspect ratio on a DVD. What good is a film in pan-and-scan? Format to fit me TV. Give us a break. This is a great film and should be shown the same way it was in the theater. All of Kubrick's films should be out in their original aspect ratio. We are more selective consumers now, don't try and pawn off this silly pan-and-scan to us any more. Give us widescreen or don't put it on DVD.
I really like this movie. it's awesome in so many ways. But, it doesn't follow the book. I was a little disappointed by that. the ending is copletly different. The newer t.v. movie was perfect. It stay true to the book. Probably because King was there to see to that. Of course Jack rocks.
I mostly just like it when Jack goes psycho.
"I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in."
That's my man, baby! yeah! Go, baby, go! Uh-huh!
A super hit movie, i watched it 5 times now im willing to watch it again.
Jack Nicolsan did a great job he was superb.
finally, that what i call a real horror movie!
Watch it and and see!
If you don't like this film, you should not be allowed to watch movies.
Heres a "must have" horror! This is one of the best I own. I could watch this over and over and never get tired of it. If you don't own it than I suggest that you go out and purchase it, because you won't regrett it
