I believe that this film is the best story ever told on film, and I'm about to tell you why. Tim Robbins plays Andy Dufresne, a city banker, wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. He is sent to Shawshank Prison in 1947 and rec...eives a double life sentence for the crime. Andy forms an unlikely friendship with "Red" (Morgan Freeman), the man who knows how to get things. Andy faces many trials in prison, but forms an alliance with the wardens because he is able to use his banking experience to help the corrupt officials amass personal fortunes. The story unfolds.... I was so impressed with how every single subplot was given a great deal of respect and attention from the director. The acting was world-class. I have never seen Tim Robbins act as well since, Morgan Freeman maybe (e.g. Seven). The twists were unexpected, an although this film had a familiar feel, it wasn't even slightly pretentious or cliched, it was original. The cinematography was grand and expressive. It gave a real impression of the sheer magnitude of this daunting prison. But the one thing which makes THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION stand above all other films, is the attention given to the story. The film depends on the story and the way in which it unravels. It's a powerful, poignant, thought-provoking, challenging film like no other. Gripping Tale of the Power of the Spirit

This movie is a testament to the power of the spirit. Under great pressure to succomb to the challenges of prison life, these characters overcome the odds through support and self-awareness. Robbins plays a character who finds himself in prison and ...faces ordeals typical of that environment. Freeman portrays an institutionalized inmate who takes Robbins under his wings and befriends him. The two form a bond like no other and, in the end, proves to be highly beneficial towards one another's existence. A must-see for all prison movie enthusiast. Excellent!! Read more Less

Andy Dufresne: Get busy living, or get busy dying The best quote from the film. So much can be said just from that one line. There are alot of folks in this world who have many mental issues, I am one of those many. This movie has a way of getting i...nto your mind, showing you the real deal. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it showed me that I am not the only one who suffers. Andy and Red have a friendship that cant be broken by a simple fight, I wish I could say that about some people, but there are the few who understand what a friend is, and can deal with how the person is. Pros: Too -- Powerful. Way before it's time in movie making!!!

Cons: So powerful, I cried like a child, and became a man.

I bought this movie about ten years ago. I knew nothing about it. I overheard a few people say it was a great movie. But it was not enough for me to go out and buy it. However, I started hearing that comment more and more frequently. So, I decided re...nt it. At the time when I got this movie, I was going through a lot in my life. I could not afford my college tuition. I had serious family problems. I was going through a hard time finding and keeping a decent job...etc. Little did I know, that some movie with some strange name was going to come along and change everything. I remember actually renting the movie from blockbuster. I sat down on that Saturday night, with no sense of what’s about to happen to me. I put the movie in and watched in aw on how two men overcame the worst of possible circumstances under unbearable conditions, only to come out victorious at the end. I cried after watching that movie. I stayed up all night in silence for a few hours in the darkness of my room, as I consume the full power of that movie as I replayed the story over and over in my head. I became a fully adult male that night at the age of 22, not 18 or 21. This movie stayed with me since than, and will do so for the rest of my life. All other movies I now see serves the sole purpose of entertainment. No other movie will or can never do what Shawshank Redemption has done for me. I'm now a college graduate. I have my own business. I have a beautiful wife with two beautiful sons. I take nothing for granted anymore. Even when I'm stressed with the weight of the world, I still manage to smile with the thought of knowing that I will come out victorious if I have hope. I've seen Shawshank Redemption over 50 times, and still counting. I've requested to have this movie put in my coffin at my passing. That's how much I love this movie. I see every movie Mr. Morgan Freeman and Mr. Tim Robins comes out with. I haven’t had the opportunity to meet Morgan. But I did get to meet Tim at a club called Bungalow-8 in NYC. He is a truly nice guy. I thank the heavens the producers, all the cast, for allowing me the opportunity to view such a beautiful, inspiring and powerful film. Thank you. Read more Less
