This adaptation to The Secret Garden was very well done. It followed the book well and was filmed in a beautiful spot. The acting was first class and Maggie Smith pulls off the perfect up-tight gaurdian. Well done, very well done overall
Impressive performance by the cast, especially Kate Maberly. The film was beautifully shot and the scenery was stunning. I also like the music score which went along well with the movie.
Of all the films that have been produced of "The Secret Garden", this one by far surpasses all of the others both in acting and scenery. Kate Maberly portrays the orphan Mary Lennox with the greatest aptitude and emotion I've ever seen in a young actor -- I hope we see more of her talent in future films! Her pessimistic attitude in the beginning is very believable, and I love her reaction to the Gardener, "It's revolting how these people talk to me!" when he won't answer her questions on demand. She demands the same answer from a songbird, who just stares at her quizzically. Thus, in contrast, she finds that she cannot demand of nature what she expects from people, having been spoiled with riches yet ignored and unloved. She discovers that nature, like people, survives if it is loved and cared for. She begins saving the unloved garden and develops a connection with nature and animals, a purity of spirit that no human can replace. The garden and it's fauna and flora become her kindred family, along with a peasant boy and his compassionate sister, who are close to nature as well. Anyone having seen "Legend" by director Ridley Scott knows what I mean by ambience and scenery in a film. This film does just that and equally as well. The man-made gothic castle is cold and alien to Mary, but in contrast, nature's secret garden that she discovers outside is filled with magic and life. The garden scenery is magnificent and magical and draws you in and makes you wish to be there! And the musical score to the film doesn't distract from the acting, but rather enhances it. The conclusioin comes together perfectly to drive home a very important point: "If you look around, you will see the whole world is a garden."
The Secret Garden is a classic childrens story by Francis Hodgeson Burnett and now it is a classic childrens movie. The characters were played to perfection, the scenery was georgeous, the children were adorable, the storyline couldn't have been more exciting. If you're looking for a good movie, not just for the kids, rent The Secret Garden. You won't regret doing it. I highly recommend the movie, especially if you're absolutely crazy about the book.
