When I was looking for Google Story by David Vise, I came across The Search and found it readable.

John Battelle was a founder of The Industry Standard and then one of the original editors of Wired, which are two famous IT magazines. Therefore, The Search is an insightful book for readers to know deeper about the history of Google. He does an excelled job at looking back at the evolution of the search field from its early days, from greater detail about Google, to Yahoo, Altavista, and so forth.

From my point of view, this book is more excellent and objective than Google Story. David Vise seems enamored with Google, so he writes all the best. If you have appetite for the history of search engines and the their power, I recommend you to read this book first, and Google Story later. Set your mind at rest because there is not too much overlap between the them.
