There were two different Savoy Sultans but they were closely related style-wise. The original group was led by saxophonist Al Cooper and performed regularly at the Savoy Ballroom during 1937-41 and remained active up until 1946. Considered one of the hardest-swinging of all small groups of the era, the band consisted of two trumpets, three reeds including altoist Rudy Williams and for a time tenor saxophonist George Kelly, plus a three-piece rhythm section.
