Continuing the story they began in 1978's THE HOBBIT, directors Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin present THE RETURN OF THE KING, the close to J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series. As hobbits Frodo and Samwise head to Mount Doom to destroy the evil ring that brings plague to the land, they must overcome a number of obstacles--orcs, ring wraiths, the deadly Gollum, and the madness of the ring itself--while Gandalf and Aragon head an epic battle against the evil forces that threaten to destroy all of Middle-earth.

THE RETURN OF THE KING ends the cycle started in THE HOBBIT and continued in Ralph Bakshi's THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Viewers get to see an aged Bilbo Baggins contentedly smoking his pipe and listening to his nephew Frodo's tales. Orson Bean and John Huston reprise their roles as Bilbo and Gandalf. (Bean also lends his voice to Frodo.) And as with THE HOBBIT, there's plenty of thrilling action, masterfully painted backgrounds, and catchy Glenn Yarbrough songs.

    Nice If Not Spectacular

For those who found it difficult to derive full satisfaction from "The Lord Of The Rings" by Ralph Bakshi due to restrictions which could only allow exploration of the first two novels in this trilogy at least the Rankin/Bass team could conclude this... tale by J.R.R. Tolkien thanks to this special on television. The appearance of the illustrations look as if they were done in haste and are without the detail of "The Hobbit" and the animation is nowhere on par with the approach Bakshi brought to cinema. Yet much like "The Hobbit" before it which Rankin and Bass also brought to television "Return Of The King" can easily convert those unfamiliar with Tolkien even if the plot riddles itself with far too much detail. John Huston returns as Gandalf and Orson Bean who was the voice of Bilbo in the introductory chapter returns to also perform as the young kin to the latter. The late Roddy McDowall is just as dynamic as Samwise Gamgee and further raises the ante. Read more Less

    Pros: Good story

Cons: The music please make it stop!

I submitted my first review to Netflix today on a show I really wanted to watch. Have you seen the cartoon editions of “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings”? The first two are GREAT but this one well...read for yourself. I should have listened to... Gollum comment below. The show is good BUT the music is painfully overdone, it's like nails on a chalkboard. I'll watch the other two previous cartoons over and over but the music in "Return of the King" is like Vogan poetry out of "Hitchhiker's Guild to the Galaxy". Lots of luck plugging your ears during the singing, you will need it. If you can get over the songs you may enjoy the cartoon. Then again, if you can get over the songs "Barney and Friends" is your favorite show. This is a comment before me in Netflix. 162 out of 217 people found this review helpful. NO, PRECIOUS!! Don't make us watch the horrid, filthy movie again, precious! It burns our eyes, it does! Screeches in our ears, precious, with the horrible music, precious, it does! Precious should see the Peter Jackson movies if he wants to see Tolkien's books in a movie, Gollum! Read more Less
