    Pros: Featurettes, Fact Tract

    Cons: No commentaries

This review is intended to help people like me, who already own "Leon/The Professional: Uncut International Edition." If you only own the American version of "The Professional" or if you do not own this DVD at all, your decision... is a no-brainer -- buy this version. The international version and the Deluxe Edition are 24 minutes longer because these scenes were deemed "too explicit" for the American audience (this misleading description comes from Columbia/Tristar). These involved the 12 year old Matilida working as a true partner with Leon on many of his hits, and also shows Matilda falling in love with Leon. Even though Matilida wants to consummate her love for Leon, it is handled in a very pure and innocent manner because Leon has the emotional (and perhaps intellectual) level of a 14 year old, and never attempts to take advantage of Matilda, who is actually the dominant partner. If you already own the Uncut International Edition, you know that there are no Special Features to speak of. A trailer doesn't really count, except here, because the Deluxe Edition has no trailer. In the two disk Deluxe Edition, there are three nice featurettes: "10 year retrospective," "Jean Reno: the Road to Leon" and "Natalie Portman: Starting Young." These are nice, but could have been (should have been?) longer, at 25, 12 and 14 minutes each respectively. There is a lot of insightful info in these featurettes nevertheless.Another, unadvertised, "feature" of the Deluxe Edition is that it has DTS, unlike the Uncut International Edition. However, what really distinguishes this version from the UIE is the "fact track" which are subtitles which add informational bits of trivia or trivial bits of info, depending on your viewpoint. For example, did you know that the young blond who escaped Leon's first hit also played the Diva in "Fifth Element"?Really disappointed that there were no commentaries, especially by Natalie Portman. Anyone who knows that Ms. Portman is a Harvard grad, and who listened to the "Garden State" commentary knows that Ms. Portman is as delightful to listen to as to watch. Apparently, Luc Besson, doesn't believe in them.If you're not convinced that you should buy this film, read this:http:/

he only point where I disagree with Bill Hunt is about owning three versions of this film. If I hadn't alrady sold the American version to Blockbuster, I would be using it as a coaster. Do yourself a favor -- the next time you go to Costco, buy this two-disk version.

    Top 20 All-time

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 12, 2003 | 1 out of 1 found this The Professional (1994) review helpful

The only movie I ever paid to see five times at the theatre.
Miss Portman is fantastic, Jean Reno is solid as always, and Gary Oldman is way over the top. All that in the Super-Bit package. ENJOY!

    Beautifully filmed, directed, and acted!

I personally watch films that have not been hyped up, or that ive been told were box office hits. I like to watch films that leave you with something to talk about with the person you saw it with. The Professional was reviewed on the box "Makes Speed... look like a slow ride to grandma's house" and I feel that was a poor review to put on the box. The Professional was what I felt was strong on heart warming tense emotional scene's mixed with great well placed action when it was needed. I feel the musical scores and camera work were superb. While watching this I was bothered by some perverse things though. The violence didn't bother me but the relationship beetween Matilda (Portman) and Leon(Reno). I felt there was some bizarre sexual underscore to it. Then I read the original script on the internet, and read the cut scene's for the french release. And my intuition was right the foreign release was extremely perverse and I feel if it was released in America like it was it would be banned. The American release is alright though, most people wont notice the perverse underscore. I personally enjoyed the tense filming of the american release and enjoyed the terrific acting. It may not make speed look like a slow ride to grandma's house but its emotions, originality, and acting do! Read more Less

    Best moovie

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Mar 21, 2005

    Pros: ...

    Cons: ...

Jean Reno is not the best actor I've ever seen, but Luc wrote this role specially for him... So Jean made his job excelent. It's the best film for me. That song, written by Bjork is my favourite. Nataly Portman in 1994 was the most cute & per...fect "little woman". I can watch this moovie all my free time... Read more Less

    "Lolita" with professional hit

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 15, 2003

A 13 year-old Portman is saved from being slayed with her family and a boring ghetto life by her knight Leon, a professional hitman. She then takes up the assassin trade in order to kill the bad cop, Gary Oldman, who gunned down her younger brother.... For the cynical, hopeless romantic this is a great movie. I'd also recommend "Romeo is Bleeding" starring Oldman. Read more Less
