Pros: unflinching
Cons: catholic dogma and superstition included
After all the hype and controversy of this film I was eager to see it and make up my own mind, so I pre-ordered it.
I'd watched the documentaries that panned Gibson, labelling him as an anti-Semitic and someone who is obsessed with violence. I have to say that although I agree with the latter - which his earlier films are a good source for evidence - but the anti-Semitic line I didn't buy - until his recent outbursts. I think - like most racism - it's hereditory. I've heard some of his father's rantings.
I didn't buy this film for entertainment. I think it's important to note this, as it isn't an entertaining film, unless you are something of a sadist. I bought it because I wanted to really get to grips with the Crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Other films such as The Greatest Story Ever Told and Jesus Of Nazareth were extremely good, but lacked the true brutality of the Cross.
Having said that, I did find the extreme nature of the violence a distraction. It went on for far too long. I agree that it was necessary to the reality of what Christ did on the Cross, but I would've liked to see more about the resurrection, which was limited to about 30 seconds at the end of the movie with Jesus getting up and walking away from the tomb - but it is called "the Passion" for a reason.
I loved the fact that Gibson used Aramaic, Hebrew (ancient) and Latin with subtitles. This made the film more real than the continuous brutality. To hear the words as they would've been spoken was wonderful. I do have to say though, that there was a certain amount of poet license taken there.
The opening scene at Gethsemane was sublime, beautiful cinematography.
The acting was excellent too.

I thought the movie was awsome, basically it is based on a true story... not was... Jesus Christ still lives... spiritually... But he will be back to walk the earth very soon... we as souls in human flesh need to get our acts together... get your house in order... get ready because he told you to watch the for the signs.. what elese could you not believe.. everthing is speaking for itself. the movie was awsome Mel.... they weren't ready for something that real... I'm tired of all these fake stupid movies with all the weird demonized scenes. we are not suppose to sit up and watch this crap. wake up people do you see whats happening.. what will it TAKE TO WAKE UP BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE........

I finally got a chance to watch this movie. Even after all the public talk and criticism, I was still taken aback by the scenes and storytelling.
To imagine a human being being put through such torture and humiliation is awe inspiring whether you're a religious person or just a compassionate human being.
I found this movie to be excellent in its realism and you could actually relate to how people could behave in this manner...they're doing it today!
This movie was more about the sacrifice instead of the violence. You felt the pain and humiliation. The visual captured your mind far easier than the words.

The most gruesome and violent movies I have ever watched would have to include Conan the Barbarian, Romper Stomper, The Excorcist, Silence of the Lambs and Carrie. Now I will have to include The Passion of the Christ. Produced by Mel Gibson, this movie goes through Jesus's final days after the Last Supper, where he goes into hiding, is arrested, taken in for questioning, interrogated, kicked, beaten and mocked constantly until his death. It also shows Judas having regrets about 'betraying innocent blood' and going crazy until he eventually hangs himself, and how Mary says that she will 'die with him'. Many a person who has seen it has claimed that it is 'bloody' and 'gruesome' - they are not wrong. Yet, it poses many of the moral dilemmas one faces about forgiveness, sacrifices etc ie is one prepared to forgive and pray for those who have betrayed them? Or how far is one prepared to sacrifice themselves for one's loved ones? Even if one isn't a Christian, it is still nevertheless extremely moving.

Like all films about our LORD they never show the Word in it's entirity. This film may have been bloody, and graphically violent, but it is what has trully happen to our Savior on his way to die on the cross. Eventhough I have to close my eyes or walk away sometimes, this film puts me in rememberence how my LORD suffered to save me. This film reminds when I am suffering that the LORD has been there long before me, suffering comes on us because the world is evil, filled with sin and we are not apart of the world anymore. Anyway we are not greater than our master, we must go through this, but we are not alone, we have The LORD every step of the way. Anyway be of good cheer for the LORD has overcome the world.
