    Pros: Truth

    Cons: Blood

This is a beautifully made film. At first it might seem very gruesome but that is exactly the way it is depicted in The Bible. Our Lord suffered. All films to date aren't even close to depicting the last 12 hours as far as his suffering is concer...ned. This film did it. It also helps you recognize the importance of his sacrifice for us. Are we worthy of the suffering that he did for us? We have to re-evaluate our relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ before it is too late............Thank You!!!!!!! Read more Less

Pros: Cinematic genius, historically accurate, brilliant acting

Cons: Too intense for small children

Scripture states that the Christ was beaten beyond recognition, and the fact that Mel Gibson has depicted that in this film seems to be the thing about this movie that has turned the stomach of so many reviewers. Which is a shame since it is the vio...lence done upon The Christ and the "Passion" he undergoes that is the heart, the theme of this film. Yes, the scene where Jesus is flogged is violent, bloody, brutal, heart-rending, frightening, disgusting, and it still doesn't depict fully the violence that was done. In this film Judas's suicide is depicted, but scripture tells us that after he died Judas's body fell to the ground and his intestines spilled on the ground. If Gibson was after gore he could have shown that, but he doesn't bother to show us that since the betrayer is not his focus, Jesus is. If you want to understand the Christian faith, either as a seeker, a believer, or just out of curiosity, you should seek out and study three sources: Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," The Gospel of John, and the book "More than a Carpenter" by Josh McDowell. This movie is definitely ane eye-opener. Read more Less

    Pros: The Message

    Cons: Gory

This is no doubt the best made film of all times. Even if you are not a believer, you can't help but to feel something. It is one thing to be taught and to read about how Jesus suffered for us, but to actually see it is another. "For God ...so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16 Read more Less

    Pros: Cinematography was great

    Cons: None worth mentioning

My one "critical" remark of Gibson's film is that he, most likely, held back in his depiction of Christ's beating and subsequent crucifixion. Roman crucifixions were beyond brutal. Gibson took the observer to the very edge; had he... gone any further, it is quite possible that one might have exited the theatre. It is abundantly clear, however, that this is the closest viewers have had to witness an objective, historically and biblically accurate version of the passion of Jesus. Every facet was masterfully recreated. The lighting, cinematography and acting were the technical highlights. The story itself is the clincher--an emotional and spiritual excursion that was, admittedly, difficult to watch at times. But in the end I'm so glad that Gibson made the film and that Jesus died and was resurrected for you and me. Read more Less

    Pros: Very Realistic

This is as close as you will get to seeing what really happened. You will feel everything! It will make you think about what Christ did for you. What have you done for Him?

Pros: As far as movies go, it was very well crafted.

Cons: It adds to the Scriptures way to much.

First of all I must set the record straight by saying that I have no desire to bash Catholics... however, as a Christian, I felt the need to inform people that this movie is not so much inspired by the Bible as it is by the 14 Stations of the Cross, ...which is a Catholic belief. Roger Ebert is a Catholic, and he himself said "anyone raised as a Catholic will be familiar with the stops along the way; [The Passion of the Christ] screenplay is inspired not so much by the Gospels as by the 14 Stations of the Cross. As an altar boy, serving during the Stations on Friday nights in Lent, I was encouraged to meditate on Christ's suffering, and I remember the chants as the priest led the way from one station to another: At the Cross, her station keeping... Stood the mournful Mother weeping... Close to Jesus to the last."As I said, I am not bashing Catholics, but this movie does add to the Scriptures way to much... there are many unbiblical sceans and unbiblical words put into Jesus' mouth, and my concern with that is that alot of people tend to take it as Scripture whether it's in the Bible or not. This is probably the most violent movie ever made, but alot of the violence in this movie was not recorded in the Scriptures. Aside from that, this movie focuses on the physical sufferings of Christ, but according to 2 Corinthians 5:21 and Isaiah 53:12, the SPIRITUAL suffering was the most significant part of Christ's death, and this is somthing which has been overlooked for a long time due to an ecumenical movement which has brought confusion between Catholicism and biblical Christianity. In conclusion, I can not recommend this movie simply because I believe that it is misleading. I could give more info on these matters, but I would probably be at my computer all day if I did that. If you are interested in finding out more about these matters, then I recommend a very eye-opening and insightful book called "Showtime for the Sheep?: The Church and the Passion of the Christ". If you are interested you can order the book at www.thebereancall.org This book will help to clear up some of the things I have explained in this review, and even more. God bless!P. S. Please do not think that I mean any harm by this, because I don't. I am just someone who has a very strong concern about were todays churches are headed... Read more Less

Pros: It Was Realistic, and in no way sugarcoated.

    Cons: No Cons

When people ask you if you liked this movie it's hard to put it into words. In my opinion it gave us all a first hand look about what really happened.Sure we have all read the crucifixion story a thousand times, but you can only imagine what it mus...t have looked like. All other Jesus movies i've seen, seem real but at the same time they don't even come close to describing what it must've been like.Bang up job Mel. The movie was good but the book was better. Read more Less

    Pros: Masterful

    Cons: Few things not needed

I have to say that, and most people will write me off because of my age of 15 but I don't care. But yea, I have to say that this film just gives you something and an experience that you can never really forget. Some Jewish have said that not onl...y the director but the movie is anit-semitic. I disagree. By seeing what they want to see and not what was meant to be seen, I'm sure they can conjur up an excuse for it to be anti-semitic. It doesn't matter though. Both the Word of God and the movie tell us that Christ died for ALL of us, no exception was made for anyone and especially not the followers of Jesus! It says it in the Bible, it says it in the flim: Forgive your enemies and love them. The fact of the matter is if they didn't see that from the movie its because they didn't WANT to see it. All that aside, it was a great movie still. I did have some problems with it though. I like the way they showed Satan but the fact that he carried around a baby or whatever that was, was just weird and not needed IMO. The same with Judos being mauled by kids that are apparently Satan as well. You knew what it was but make it work or leave it out. And IMO it didn't work. This movie was indeed about the last 12 hours, but I would like to see more on the ressurection. I don't know if Mel is considering a sequel but maybe so. All of these two tiny minor mistakes can't even begin to think about putting a dent on this film but are there nonetheless. This is something that will inevitably be added to my collection and hopefully to yours too. You don't have to be a Christian to watch it, just do that, watch it. Well worth it. I haven't read the reviews before me, only a few of the first ones so if anything I am disscussing is long over with I apologize but it is my opinion anyway. In conclusion, a must see and if you do watch it you'll get what you were looking for out of it. Read more Less

The Passion of the Christ (2004)

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 1, 2004 | 2 out of 2 found this The Passion of the Christ (2004) review helpful

    Pros: Greatest Movie Ever

    Cons: Very Graphic

I grew up a catholic; I went to a Catholic school where we practiced and studied the Stations of the Cross during lent. This movie is based on those hours of Good Friday and The raising of Jesus Christ. This movie shows the story and the "Passio...n" (sacrifice) Jesus made to forgive our sins. Filmed in Aramaic this movie puts you at the scene and time of this incident. Another great part of this movie is the facial expressions of Mary (Jesus' mother). She doesn't say many words but her facial expressions tells the mood of the scene. This movie shows a lot of brutality; but is necessary to show people that this is how it was during that era. (Roman Ruler Ceasar) One more thing this movies clearifies is that Ponsius Pilot was actually a reasonable person and didn't want to order Jesus to be crucified. Overall, this movie is the best movie ever... You actually will cry 2+ times throughout this movie. Read more Less
