    Homer's "The Odyssey"

By Anna Grady  Jul 26, 2006

    Pros: epic

    Cons: repetitive and boring

This is the classic Greek epic. A decade after the fall of Troy, the Greek king and hero Odysseus has yet to come home because he is trapped on an remote island by a love-stricken nymph. At home, his wife is being harrassed by suitors, his palace ran...sacked, and assination plots being devised against his son. With the help of the gods, Osysseus sets sail for home, beleagured by obstacles. On arrival, he disguises himself and plans to retake his castle, and with the help of his also-crafty wife who suspects his true identity, wins a bow-and-arrow contest between suitors only he could possibly win. After winning, he slaughters the suitors and retakes his castle. Peace and power are returned. Classic and much more readable and exciting than The Iliad. Has less war but more adventure. Can still be insanely repetitive and boring at times, but very satisfying by the end. A should-read. 9/10 Read more Less

Pro Reviews: The Odyssey

  • Enhanced Muze Note

The Odyssey is the part of Homer we are best equipped to appreciate, in this time of women's newly asserted dignity, and Fagles is the person best equipped to bring the epic to us.
