The movie was going along good until the blond woman started flying and making her eyes glow. It would have been fine if they told you why she had supernatural powers, but they dont. Maybe I just have problems, but

Great puzzler, is it a gate to heaven or hell. Or is Heaven hell or vice versa...I don't know my head hurts. Anyway, Johnny Depp does a good job. The ending still a headache..but what the hell, it's someone's gate

One of the best of Polanski's creations!
For those who look for only recreational purposes in movies, this well-hidden-meaning triller will be a disapointment.
To understand it well you have to be familiar with Perez-Reverte's masterpiece, El Club Dumas. Polanski's attempt to simplify the plot in order to bring the idea of the story to viewer is in a way successful, however the core meaning of the story is somehow changed. Still, an excelent work, for those who can "see between the lines" and explore the underlying signs of the events, this is a remerkable presentation!Was this review helpful? Yes - Nowell done

don't even rent this movie out of curiosity. i did and it sucked. one word for this flick: shallow. and i love jonny depp, but the writing was just too bad. you knew exactly what was going to happen every step of the way.

I was expecting more tension and more mystery but instead I found a rather comedic movie about satanism with various Gothic cliches. I like Johnny Depp and have enjoyed his caricaturized characters in movies like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Sleepy Hollow" but I would like to see this movie go beyond just that. I guess Polanski was just having fun or may be he's losing his touch...

The film has good elements. It's pretty. It really is. <End of Good Elements> How this movie ever made it past the investors is beyond me. The pace is mind-numbingly slow, and Polanski seems desperate to build tension, heavily relying on music and "mystery thugs" to artificially create suspense. Depp, while normally a fantastic actor, churns out a thoroughly mediocre performance, rarely changing his emotional level. I do not wish to give away the end, but I will say this...never have I experienced such a tremendous cinematic disappointment. Expect nothing...that is what you'll receive.

...still worth the trip. Depp does another great job as a rare book collector with few scruples. A great supernatural thriller for those unafraid of trying something new. Recommended.

If you liked the sixth sense, Stigmata and The end of days "The Ninth Gate" is another very surprising very good movie.
Not being the biggest fan of Johnny Deep, I was very surprised of his bone chilling performance. I give it a 5 on 5 because I love long movies and I consider this one very well full-filled!
I suggest you give it a try...
