    The Natural is EXCELLENT

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 12, 2000 | 1 out of 1 found this The Natural (1984) review helpful

This is simply one of the best movies ever. Redford delivers a terrific performance as Roy Hobbs. This movie is buried in symbolism but looking aside all that its simply an enjoyable movie with a terrific story.

    REDFORD AT HIS BEST

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 25, 2002

Redford, McGavin, Brimley, Farnsworth, Prosky, and ballplayers are sensational. Hershey shines, Basinger is believable, Redford's on-screen son is more effeminate than Close --- who always has zero sex appeal. Newman's score is magical, as are dire...cting and filming. Read more Less

A delightful, feel good can of corn, despite
Redford's politics (did you catch the scene
with the Upton Sinclair promotion?). I'd like
to know, though, why Darren McGavin didn't get
any credit for playing the gambler.

I don't like baseball that much, but I love this movie. It is pure magic, and moves me everytime I see it. A masterpiece of American cinematography to be treasured for all time. Every man should own a copy of this movie.

    An Amazing Movie

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 16, 2001

Every time this movie comes on TV, I drop everything and watch it all the way through to the end. I don't know what it is about this flick, it's just that darn good. I must have seen it about 20 or 30 times since it always comes on the cable supersta...tions quite a bit. I don't think I'll ever get tired of this flick. Every time I watch it, I find something new about it. The direction by Levinson is just spectacular. If HOOSIERS is the definite basketball movie, than this is the definite baseball movie. IF YOU SHOW IT...WE WILL WATCH.

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 2, 2001

More than a decade from it's original release, THE NATURAL holds up as a definative baseball movie. There was much debate about the ending, and the casting of Robert Redford when the film was released. Some thought Redford seemed too old looking in t...he opening moments of the film when he was supposed to be a young man. If you look beyond that and watch the body of the film he he a perfect fit. How all-American can you get other that Baseball and Robert Redford. I suppose if they film was shot in the early 90's maybe Kevin Costner or now even maybe Brad Pitt would have been cast. But there is the always a movie star quality of Redford that the latter seem unable to retain. The story is as old and cornball as you can get, but again what do you expect. It's Baseball. BB is America's Mythical Sport. The DVD itself sports a first rate transfer on crisp sound. The best treatment it has ever gotten. The downer on the DVD is the lack of a truly great documentary or audio commentaries. This movie really cries out for a Special Edition with Deleted Scenes, Interviews and such. But that is my only complaint about this Modern-Day Classic. A must for all movie (and Baseball) lovers. Read more Less

    More than a baseball flick

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Aug 31, 2000

In this wonderful adaptation, Robert Redford's Roy Hobbs emerges from a brilliant screenplay as one of the most profoundly heroic yet approachably human characters to see the screen in many years. Steeped in the symbolism of Christianity, but played... out through the body of a ballplayer of unlimited potential, the film depicts Hobbs' personal evolution from innocence through tragedy to transcendency. Redford's portrayal is easily the most complex and powerful performance in any sports-themed movie I can think of.The interplay of the forces of good and evil are the foundation of the film, and they are intricately woven to form interesting and inspiring characters. Particularly affecting is the conflicted femme fatale played by Kim Basinger -- caught between the attractive vices offered by underworld gamblers and crooks, and her emotional ties to her uncle (the manager of Hobbs' team), her nature and to Hobbs. Resplendent is Glenn Close as her alter ego, the childhood sweetheart and picture of purity. Around them all swirl the darker aspects of humanity, altering and shaping their destinies, but never overwhelming those who seek salvation.Worthy of special mention is a soundtrack of monumental proportions, obviously influenced by Aaron Copland and capable of both the subtlety and effervescing power to parallel Hobbs' journey.Hobbs, in the course of the film, attains heroic status of the kind reserved for the characters of classical mythology, but always is human -- warm, emotional, fatally flawed, yet entirely awesome. Through Hobbs' trials and tribulations, one truly feels a part of his endeavors and shares in his successes, including perhaps the most vindicating final twenty minutes of any film, ever. It's all one can do not to cheer out loud.Besides being one of the greatest sports movies ever put to film, "The Natural" is a thoroughly absorbing story that transcends baseball -- about how the people we surround ourselves with and the choices we make can irreversibly affect our lives. It is not to be missed. Read more Less
