Following her depiction of youthful rebellion in the independent features THIRTEEN and LORDS OF DOGTOWN, Catherine Hardwicke takes an anomalous detour with THE NATIVITY STORY. A simple depiction of the Biblical tale told from Mary's perspective, the film lends realism and humanity to a story that is mythical in its proportions, with 16-year-old Keisha Castle-Hughes (WHALE RIDER) delivering a performance indicative of her star potential. The scene is set in ancient Nazareth, where the people live in poverty, oppressed by the heavy taxes and iron hand of King Herod. Herod himself lives in fear of a prophecy that foretells the coming of a great king, and is constantly tightening his grip on an already terrorized land. Mary is a young, virtuous, fun-loving girl whose family arranges her marriage to Joseph, a man she hardly knows but who promises to provide for her. Mary is unwilling, but her rebellion is soon eclipsed by a greater fear when the angel Gabriel appears to her and informs her of her destiny as the mother of Jesus. Having taken a vow to remain pure for a year, Mary is afraid of what the townspeople will do to her when they hear of her pregnancy. She goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who also carries a child given to her by God, and who offers her support and comfort. When Mary returns to Nazareth heavily pregnant, Joseph is consumed with jealousy and anger, and only when he receives word from God in a dream does he agree to claim the child for his own. Eventually, Herod decides to take a census in order to find the Messiah foretold in the prophecy, and Joseph and Mary set off on the difficult journey to Bethlehem. The way the couple's relationship progresses lends heart to the tale, and comic relief is provided by the three wise men (Nadim Sawalha, Eriq Ebouaney, and Stefan Kalipha), making this an effective, inspiring, and joyful rendition of the well-known tale.

    Pros: Screen play, acting

    Cons: special effects

Many wonderful scenes. This DVD should play well for both Christians and those looking for peace and good will in difficult times. Mary and Joseph are my new Biblical heroes.

Well paced with strong characters and actors...

Pros: The Tone was excellent, the movie is a class act portrayal

Cons: Moves along gentlly and simply, but this works, too

Mary is a wonderful figure in the Bible who suffers and is the mother of Christ. She travels with him from childhood to adulthood--to say nothing of birth. She accedes to the Lord God and bears the child that is born by the Holy Spirit. With these b...asic facts down, we learn of a love between Joseph and Mary, chaste and true. We find a kindness in Joseph, and there are miracles in the movie that are handled tastefully. These are registered with this viewer as meaningful and inspiring. Nothing cheap or trashy in this film. The actress playing Mary does an excellent job throughout the movie portraying a woman of serenity, and a woman of humility. She is a quiet Mary, this Mary of the movie. A young Mary, too. This fits my perceptions of her, helping to make the movie more believable. Mary accepts God. She says, "Let it be unto me..." and those words are enough. A statement born of, and honest to, the Bible. She shows mature obedience, for though a woman she is really the age of a girl. She shows a quietly deep faith. Afterall, we have a movie of faith, evil, spiritual journey, and great story. Many threats come the couple's way, and their cruelty is chilling. The settings are well done, and the garb of the characters convincing enough to set the scenes. We see how simply the people live, their poverty and need which they work to satisfy, and in their relationship with God find themselves satisfied with the cultural and religious parts of their devoted Hebrew practices. Joseph and Mary are good people, decent, and we learn special people whom angels visit to help them along their way in God's plan for mankind. This movie is for all ages. I recommend it as a taste of Mary's life and an introduction to the birth of Christ--miraculous! --Peter Menkin, Easter 2007 Read more Less
