this movie is a inventive way to show new ways in Animation. i loved it , it is my favorite movie even though i am only 16
Those who have not read the book will not be able to follow the story. Those who have will not recognize the story. What a horrible adaptation. It reads with less.content than Reades Digest condenced series
I was not far wrong when I quoted in my more positive reviews of "The Hobbit" and "Return of the King" that children could easily fare better with Rankin/Bass than Ralph Bakshi. They would! "Lord of the Rings" has so many things wrong: fuzzy rotoscoping of live action footage and we can easily spot the artifice, scary monsters we cannot see that clearly due to the tracings of them (and they can give the little ones nightmares), a confused, meandering storyline, and after more than two hours, no ending!
So families, let's get smart: skip "The Lord of the Rings", start with "The Hobbit" and go immediately to "Return of the King". The first and third of these animated versions of Tolkien's trilogy contain everything Bakshi's work lacks: enchantment, heart, lucidity, musical interludes, characters to care for, and a sunny attitude.
An excellent animated version of the first 2 books in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Very unique animation makes this a must see for fans of the genre. I was somewhat dissapointed that Ralph Bakshi did not complete the Return of the King but a very enjoyable 2+ hours of Tolkien none the less. For the Hobbit and RotK, you can soon pick up the Rankin/Bass version (but the animation style etc is very different and - IMO - less appealing) Some chapters have been omitted (such as Tom Bombadil and the Barrow Wights) so critical Tolkien fans may be somewhat dissapointed but the overall feel and flow of the novels are still present. In my opinion, a definate must see and probably worth a purchase if you are a Baggins fan.
It is definately something to rekindle the interest and remind us of the magic as well as tide us over until the New Line Cinema production arrives later this year.

One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them"
I have noticed that many people seem to not like this movie. That really makes me sad to see that such a wonderful and unique movie is not appreciated by everyone. My mom is a huge Tolkien fan (and has been for years) and she loves this movie. So does Tokien's family. Its the hobbit by Rankin/Bass that they didn't like. Maybe they cut out some good parts of the story but I think thats because you should use your imagination to figure it out. What was really neat about this video is the fact that they truly make you feel like you are part of this story.
This was an absolute disgrace. To think that they could make this feature without the ending is like stopping Star Wars with Luke, Han, and Lea in the trash compactor. Terrible job! Tolkien would turn over in his grave to see his hard work told so poorly. I only hope the movie does the book some justice. We'll see in December.
The only gripe I have is where the video finished... Why can't Warner Bros continue with a Sequel...
I really liked the art. It ended in a very awkward point in the story. Like every movie it could not live up to the book. But I sincerely enjoyed it for what it was worth.
Perhaps a full two hour film per chapter might do justice to the best novel of the English language, but a short cartoon can't. It is not clear if this was aimed at adults or children. Credit for the effort however. The artwork is definitely inferior to "Hobbit" and "Return of the King", companion animated films.
I liked this as a kid. But, when I saw it again later in life the constant horrid singing in the background almost drove me crazy. Not only that but the story is choppy and the animation is bad. This movie is just for kids in my opinion.
I would not recommend the viewing of this disaster to anyone who respects J.R.R. Tolkien's works. It is awful.

This movie is one of the most unique animated films of all time. Like Toystory and most of the Disney classics, the director seems to have carefully (and brilliantly) chosen the voices for his characters. The result is a powerful dramatic performance. It is a serious work, unlike the children's movie called "The Hobbit". Bakshi paints a dark yet enchanting picture of a world few have attempted to depict. As for those cynics who may say, it's not like the book. It's close enough. It's not often we get a movie with this much substance. You cannot criticize Bakshi for his vision. I doubt the new Lord of the Rings movie will come close. I'm sure it will have a great deal of costly special effects, but it will be lacking in seriousness which great actors and their great voices can bring to a movie.
Okay, so Bakshi doesn't follow the plot of the
book Lord of the Rings, but come on guys, since when
has ANYONE in Hollywood ever followed a book's true
plot??? All the same this is a brilliant film, superbly
animated, beautifully crafted and I just love the way
Bakshi super imposed a cartoon effect over real actors
and actresses. The sexy voice of John Hurt as the
Narrator was an added bonus too. Gollum was a delight to
behold with his desire to control "the precious" again,
whilst Bakshi's portrayal of the other characters was
equally well done. All of them fitted in well with how I
perceived them, from Sam Gamgee's plump face, to Gandalf's
Mysterious persona. Also the musical score was hauntingly
addictive from beginning to the end.
Considering this
film was made in 1978 when special effects were just
coming into their own, Ralph Bakshi did a fantastic job
and created a classic that should never be forgotton.
So sit down and enjoy this film, it might not be a
carbon copy of the book, but it is a damn good film all
the same.
It is not a best cartoon but I do not have to watch it as it has been produced in 1990s. It was produced 25 years ago and everything has been done to produce a good film but: Tom Bombadil should have a place in this film.
You will either hate this or love it.
The
animation is superb. Frodo is just as i imagined him.
Though there is alot missing from the story. The
characters are spot on. Some who have read the book will be
extremely annoyed with this. Tom bombadil and the
barrowdowns are missing. Aswell as the third installment of
the book, (The Return Of The King). Overall it is
definetley worth a rent, BUT DO NOT BUY wait for the live
action trilogy. Which starts with the fellowship of the
ring, around chrimbo 2001.
The only reason I gave this movie one star is because that was the lowest rating it would let me give. I read the Lord of the Rings this past year and fell in love with it almost instantly. The animation movies, however, are a different story (almost literally). I did not even watch half of this movie because I thought it gave such an injustice to the basic story line. I felt it was so bad, I just turned it off and never finished it.
Why in the world would anyone would even bother to think that the animation in this movie was anything more than pitiful is beyond me. I personaly think that J.R. Tolken's novel has been horribly distraced by the worthless animation job done. If I was to recieve this movie as a gift I would take it as the worst offense that one human could give to another human. THIS MOVIE IS SO BAD I AM ASHAMED TO GIVE IT ONE STAR!!!
I have had and seen both The Lord of the Rings, and the other two Hobbit animations that are currently in the stores, and I must say that Ralph Bakshi is not the only one to mess up with this series. The other two movies have a huge gap in them where that creator let Bakshi fill in the gaps with his unfinished series, and the two don't really add up together. In this case 1+1=4. Although I must say that of it's own right I liked Lord of the Rings better than I liked the Hobbit, it needed some color touch-ups to more clearly see the action in many places but it was more realistic than the Hobbit was. Then again, I had a copy, and an old copy at that, the unclear sections I saw could just be wear on the recording. I thought it was a truly good animation, but then, I never read the books. I just wish I could find it to buy a new copy!
Look everyone, the animated movie by Ralph Bakshi
was done in 1978 !! His method of mixing animation
with old footage (Hitler etc.) was very new, and I
think it worked !! Who knows(?) he was probably a Punk
Rocker !! I read somewhere that the story wasn't
finished because of financial problems.
I do know
however that there's a new three part movie being made in
New Zealand right now !!
B Good
Heggs.
I have to say this movie disgusted me. Had it been done completely animated it might have been better. Did the creater even read the book? Characters were totally different - Aragorn was a brown barbarian!?! Terrible
I must say that the movie was great. i saw it as a kid and loved it. after growing up and reading the trilogy i must say that there certainly was alot left out from the trilogy. but if everything was included in the movie from the book, we would have a 15 hour movie which i would not have minded but who am i? anyway i think the movie deserves a little bit more credit than what people are giving it.
Hobbits were made to femine and
wimpy.
Character deapth was very lacking.
Appears to have been
done in a hurry
and some important details left
ignored.
The slow motion during the battle scenes
was, well
the movie would have been better without it. The
battle scenes weren't done well enough.
That said, I
bought the videos cause
there was nothing else out
there.
I have never in my life been so utterly disappointed by a movie. I know that a director is entitled to his own point of view, but this is ludicrous! The plot is as full of holes as a Swiss cheese, the animation lacks continuity, the pasting of real live actors and animated characters may have been the hottest thing at the time, but it should have been done properly. As Ralph Bakshi admitted later: he was only in it for the money. It shows in every frame.
If you are a Tolkien's work fan, spend this film far. It doesn't respect characters and the story. It's told in a hurry. It should be easier to tell something as descriptive as the Lord...
In my opinion the movie was too short, and did not follow the book.It left out too many key parts. It should have been acted out by real people also.It is hard to get a good idea of the story, with a large percentage of it missing.I think the movie should be redone by "Lucas Arts".Someone should narrate the movie from the book as the story goes along.
Ralph Bakshi's portrayal of J.R.R. Tolken's wonderful trilogy, "Lord of the Rings", was, at the time, a revolutionary step in animation. Without today's computer animation, Bakshi and his team put out a beautifully animated picture that looked almost realistic enough to be a regular movie, that still retained the look and feel of an animated movie. His accuracy, as far as the storyline is concerned, is far above par. I think that it followed the book very well, enabling the audience to recreate the picture in relation to the book.
