    Dark and Dismal Bakshi Vehicle

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Oct 12, 2001

I was not far wrong when I quoted in my more positive reviews of "The Hobbit" and "Return of the King" that children could easily fare better with Rankin/Bass than Ralph Bakshi. They would! "Lord of the Rings" has so many things wrong: fuzzy rotos...coping of live action footage and we can easily spot the artifice, scary monsters we cannot see that clearly due to the tracings of them (and they can give the little ones nightmares), a confused, meandering storyline, and after more than two hours, no ending! So families, let's get smart: skip "The Lord of the Rings", start with "The Hobbit" and go immediately to "Return of the King". The first and third of these animated versions of Tolkien's trilogy contain everything Bakshi's work lacks: enchantment, heart, lucidity, musical interludes, characters to care for, and a sunny attitude. Very good - all things considered

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Sep 4, 2001

An excellent animated version of the first 2 books in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Very unique animation makes this a must see for fans of the genre. I was somewhat dissapointed that Ralph Bakshi did not complete the Return of the King but a very... enjoyable 2+ hours of Tolkien none the less. For the Hobbit and RotK, you can soon pick up the Rankin/Bass version (but the animation style etc is very different and - IMO - less appealing) Some chapters have been omitted (such as Tom Bombadil and the Barrow Wights) so critical Tolkien fans may be somewhat dissapointed but the overall feel and flow of the novels are still present. In my opinion, a definate must see and probably worth a purchase if you are a Baggins fan. It is definately something to rekindle the interest and remind us of the magic as well as tide us over until the New Line Cinema production arrives later this year."One ring to rule them all, One ring to find them. One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them" Read more Less

Tolkien's family approved of it, so shou

I have noticed that many people seem to not like this movie. That really makes me sad to see that such a wonderful and unique movie is not appreciated by everyone. My mom is a huge Tolkien fan (and has been for years) and she loves this movie. So doe...s Tokien's family. Its the hobbit by Rankin/Bass that they didn't like. Maybe they cut out some good parts of the story but I think thats because you should use your imagination to figure it out. What was really neat about this video is the fact that they truly make you feel like you are part of this story. Read more Less

    Disgrace

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jul 23, 2001

This was an absolute disgrace. To think that they could make this feature without the ending is like stopping Star Wars with Luke, Han, and Lea in the trash compactor. Terrible job! Tolkien would turn over in his grave to see his hard work told so... poorly. I only hope the movie does the book some justice. We'll see in December. Read more Less

The only gripe I have is where the video finished... Why can't Warner Bros continue with a Sequel...

    Not that bad

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 22, 2001

I really liked the art. It ended in a very awkward point in the story. Like every movie it could not live up to the book. But I sincerely enjoyed it for what it was worth.

    attempted the impossible, and failed

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Jan 17, 2001

Perhaps a full two hour film per chapter might do justice to the best novel of the English language, but a short cartoon can't. It is not clear if this was aimed at adults or children. Credit for the effort however. The artwork is definitely inferior... to "Hobbit" and "Return of the King", companion animated films. Read more Less
