George Roy Hill, better known for combining light comedy with drama as in BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID and THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP, here adapts John Le Carré's best-selling suspense novel THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL. It's set in the early 1980s, when Israeli intelligence was still reeling from the Olympic massacre of 1972 and attempting to infiltrate Palestinian terrorist groups. To achieve this, Kurtz (Klaus Kinski), a Mossad operative, tries to enlist Charlie (Diane Keaton), a well-known anti-Zionist actress. The plan works when she falls in love with Joseph (Yorgo Voyagis), an undercover Israeli agent. In a complex story ranging from England to Greece to Lebanon, she is accepted by a terrorist cell as the lover of the leader's recently deceased brother. The leader and main bomb maker, Khalil (Sami Frey), wants her to smuggle a bomb into Germany. Contrary to many other films within this subject matter, the Palestinians are not depicted as one-dimensional madmen. Their cause, and their long years of suffering in the refugee camps, is presented in a way that makes Charlie's ambiguity about the moral position of both sides entirely believable. As Charlie, Keaton, celebrated for her comedy work with Woody Allen, gives a vivid portrayal of the malleable actress whose political passion leads her into the dangerous world of Middle East politics.

diane keaton's biggest challenge to date...

    Pros: strong & interesting character/performance

Cons: role lost in complex, yet flat le carre thriller

this movie didnt work for me initially cuz diane keaton didnt seem right as charlie, at least not the way she was written in the popular john le carre book- more of a passionate julie christie/vanessa redgrave than a quirky american poser. charlie is... a leftist, pro-palestinian actress who gets railroaded into being a double agent for the israelis merely because she falls for one of the israeli agents, and she is more concerned with getting laid than any real palestinian sympathies- other than talk and photo ops. but the way keaton re-conceives the part it becomes a stronger, even more unsympathetic role- she plays an actress who just wants to be the center of attention and a habitual liar, creating fictional memories to try out on everyone around her- one of those liars who comes to believe them and discards the past and the truth in favor of trying to SEEM adorable and fascinating, and charlie acts alot more offstage then in her plays. her charlier isnt even a good actress, but this woman IS around others offset. just to be noticed, she even carries an ink pen the same color as her scarf and socks! anyway, this flaky dilettante gets caught up in the drama of being involved in a romantic political espionage ala mata hari and winds up way over her head, even telling her allies, "listen, i'm outta my depth here!" and once atrocious murders start taking place all around her and it is no longer a "starring role", but a waking nightmare with no winners and no heroes and no end- she finally gets wise to herself. she is really Nothing. so it is worth watching for diane keaton in really her most challenging role giving a daring performance as a shallow woman. but does that make for "entertainment" in a 2 hr/20 min movie?- depends on your regard for acting. those looking for a good thriller- this wont work for you. but i liked the way the filmmakers didnt take "sides" in this ongoing world tragedy of 2 peoples with justful rights to the same land. the movie is mainly for fans of great female actress/stars from bette davis through judy davis (i.e. older women & gay men maybe?)...so really a 3star for me- but with a memorable 5star performance, so i gave it a 4. i was generous.
