    The Legend is preserved!

By Yahoo! Shopping User  May 24, 2006

Pros: chemistry b/w Alejandro and Elena (Banderas/Zeta-Jones); action packed

    Cons: Joaquin character is annoying

Finally, after 7 years since the last Hollywood Zorro movie hit the big screen, director Martin Campbell is back with his original cast of Antonio Banderas in the title role, and Catherine Zeta Jones as his wife Elena de la Vega. Set 10 years after t...he last movie, The Legend of Zorro wastes no time in plunging the audience thick into trademarked action pieces - the acrobatic lunges, flips, swordfights, whip action and horseback riding. It's all familiar territory with the romanticized Old California, now at a crossroads where the state is in decision to join the rest of America. Things have changed for the de la Vega family too, as they have a new addition to the family, a son named Joaquin, who takes on traits of his father, but not knowing his father's secret identity. Naturally, family takes the central theme in this movie. Why do vigilantes wear masks - simply to protect their loved ones as they enroll in the crusade for justice. This film explores the dilemma as he struggles to be there for the general public in their hour of need, and the balance of spending enough quality time with his own family. Antonio Banderas' portrayal of Alejandro/Zorro was once again nothing short of brilliant. Certainly there was a decent script there for him to work with, but the characterization and the comic timing that he brings to the role are uniquely his own. Catherine Zeta-Jones again brings grace, charm and spirit to her reprise of Elena, but now she has the added dimension of motherhood to alter her priorities and her choices. I enjoyed this movie very much. I especially enjoyed the climactic train fight. I liked the part when Zorro tells Armand that no matter where he goes, the world is not big enough for him to hide from him. I also liked how Abraham Lincoln shows up in the end when California is joining the Union. The pros were the screenplay, which didn't care much for detail, but was still excellently written, despite lacking the drama of "Mask". Martin Campbell's stunning, sweeping direction carries on its legacy. Excellent camera-work too. Antonio Banderas and Zeta-Jones pull off good performances. The movie itself was action packed and there were many exciting stunts. The acrobatics and extreme movement in the movie is the first thing that catches your eye. Without focusing too much on the original i will say that there is no doubt that 'The Legend of Zorro' was a cracking piece of entertainment that i could watch many times over again.'The Legend of Zorro' took the legendary hero to new heights with a new story line plus special effects and unbelievable acrobatics, it was basically modern Hollywood being extravagant with a swashbuckling adventure film. After Happily Ever After Or Political Rant?

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 30, 2006

    Pros: Colorful Backdrop, Fast Action

    Cons: Misleading Story

Director Martin Campbell made an amazing movie with The Mask of Zorro in the late 90's. However, his return to the director's chair in the Legend of Zorro (2005) was nowhere near as good. Audiences were led to believe that the plot was life a...fter the fairy tale ends. We are soon led to see that The Legend of Zorro is more of a potlitical rant by Campbell. It is directly linked to issues of homeland security and the current government, but that is the movie's big downfall. The two plots are poorly woven together, and the political side eventually wins out. It makes the movie dated, much unlike its predecessor, The Mask of Zorro. The Legend of Zorro sadly won't be a legend in the annals of movie history. Read more Less

    Good for Zorro Fans

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 25, 2006

    Pros: It's Zorro, of course

    Cons: Rather unbelievable

I'm a huge Zorro fan, so I watched it, but I'm not that big a fan of Antionio Banderas. So, this is not one of my favorite movies. Also, it's a sequil, so it wasn't as good as the first one. However, the little kid is really great. An...d, it's nice to see a heroine who is able to take care of herself. All in all, an ok movie, but not one of the best ones. Read more Less

Really not that great; "Flop of Zorro"

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Apr 12, 2006

Pros: The leads were good looking

Cons: They forgot how to act; supporting cast was weak

I didn't like this as much as I was hoping. This movie fell into the sequel slump big time. Antonio Banderas is back as Alejandro de la Vega, aka "Zorro." He's still protecting the rights of the townspeople in his sleepy little Cal...ifornian town, but this time he was sloppy, and the feds found out his secret. His wife Elena is blackmailed and forced to divorce him and work as a spy for the government. After that, the plot just got sloppy and vague. I was bored enough, and this movie was long enough that I fell asleep and missed the last twenty minutes. I also didn't care. One a scale of one to five of how much I didn't like this movie, with one being "Showgirls," and five being "Spaceballs," I'll rate this one a "Judge Dredd." It lost the focus and appeal of the first movie, had too many flashy costumes and window dressing and not enough substance. Elena's character is still headstrong and independent, which is nice, but Zeta-Jones relied on her cleavage and a lot of pouting and mugging instead of showing her usual range. Ditto for Antonio, who should not play drunk in a movie again. His horse was more convincing (and yes, his horse gets drunk in this film). The little boy who plays their son is actually a pretty good actor, but there isn't very good interaction between him and the adults, which is a shame. Now him, I would watch again. Other thoughts on this movie is that the sense of suspense was gone, the fight choreography was forced (like the fencing scenes), and I had the feeling of the stars just wanting to make a fast buck by sticking with what was successful before. If a friend has already rented this, watch it at their house. Don't pay to rent it yourself. Read more Less

    If You Liked the First...

By Yahoo! Shopping User  Feb 22, 2006

Pros: Great Chemistry Between the Stars, Great Action Scenes

    Cons: Nothing New

The Mask of Zorro, also known as the movie which introduced Catherine Zet-Jones to the world at large, was a nice little hit back in 1998, grossing $233 million world-wide. Of course, that was eight years ago...the question was, would audiences be wi...lling to see a sequel so late after the first? Well, the proof is in the Box Office receipts (about half of the first), but the film itself is hardly half the movie the first is. In fcat, it's about the same as the first. Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones seem ageless, looking pretty much the same as they did in '98...and when it comes to their chemistry and their ability to do the physically demanding roles, there's no question the answer was yes. The only problem seems to be that in this case, there's nothing new. It's several years later, and the duo of Alejandro de la Vega and his wife Elena are married with a young son, Joaquim (Adrian Alonso). Elena wants Alejandro to give up as Zorro, but he can't, causing marital problems. Meanwhile, they find themselves embroiled in a scheme threatening California and it's attempts at statehood, facing off against evil French Count Armand (Rufus Sewell) and his henchman, the racist, religious fanatic Jacob McGivens (Nick Chinlund). You know what happens...lots of sword-play, explosions, and so on. The whole thing is entirely remniscent of the first movie, and it's not a bad thing. Still, some originality would have been nice. Worth the rental price. Read more Less
